‘UP Runs on Roads’: Akhilesh Yadav Hits Back at Yogi Adityanath Over Namaz Remark

Akhilesh Counters Yogi’s Statement on Roadside Namaz

A fresh political confrontation has erupted in Uttar Pradesh after Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav criticised Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath over his remarks against offering namaz on public roads.

Speaking at an event in Lucknow, Akhilesh Yadav argued that space shortages and poor urban planning were forcing many activities in the state onto roads, and accused the BJP government of unnecessarily politicising religious practices.

The Samajwadi Party leader also stressed that every citizen enjoys equal constitutional rights and said no religion should face discrimination or public humiliation.

Yogi Adityanath Warned Against Blocking Roads

The exchange follows recent comments by Yogi Adityanath, who stated that roads should not be used for religious gatherings or prayers and insisted that public spaces are meant for transportation, not religious activity.

The Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister said prayers should instead be conducted at designated places of worship and suggested that arrangements could be made in shifts if space was limited.

His remarks came ahead of Eid al-Adha celebrations later this month and quickly triggered political reactions across the state.

SP Accuses BJP of Diverting Public Attention

The Samajwadi Party intensified its criticism by accusing the BJP of encouraging divisive debates to shift focus away from governance and infrastructure issues.

Akhilesh Yadav pointed to traffic congestion and urban planning failures in Lucknow while arguing that even official government events frequently take place on roads because of inadequate public arrangements.

He claimed the real issue was administrative management rather than religion and urged leaders not to turn sensitive community matters into political controversies.

Debate Rekindles Political Polarisation in UP

The sharp exchange between the BJP and the Samajwadi Party has once again highlighted the politically charged atmosphere in Uttar Pradesh ahead of upcoming electoral battles.

Religious issues, public gatherings and law-and-order debates have often become major political flashpoints in the state, particularly during festival periods and election cycles.

Political analysts believe the latest controversy may further deepen polarisation between the ruling BJP and opposition parties as both sides intensify outreach among different voter groups.

Eid Preparations Under Political Spotlight

The controversy has also brought attention to preparations for Eid al-Adha across Uttar Pradesh, with local authorities expected to issue guidelines regarding public gatherings, traffic movement and crowd management.

Officials are likely to maintain heightened security and administrative monitoring in sensitive districts during the festival period to avoid tensions or disruptions.

The political debate surrounding religious practices in public spaces is expected to continue as parties seek to shape public opinion ahead of future elections in the state.
