Ahmedabad: In a heart-wrenching tragedy, an Air India Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner operating Flight AI171 from Ahmedabad to London crashed just two minutes after takeoff from Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport, sending shockwaves across the country. The aircraft was carrying 242 passengers when it reportedly crashed into the UG hostel mess building at BJ Medical College in Meghani Nagar.
The site of the crash—a hostel mess housing undergraduate MBBS students—has intensified the horror of the incident. While the exact number of casualties among the students is not yet confirmed, initial visuals and accounts suggest that several students may have lost their lives or are seriously injured.
Social media is flooded with distressing footage showing the wreckage engulfed in black smoke and rescue teams rushing students out of the debris. Heart-wrenching cries for help and chaos dominate the crash site as firefighters, ambulances, and NDRF teams continue their rescue efforts.

The Federation of All India Medical Association (FAIMA) posted on X (formerly Twitter): “We are deeply shocked about the news of AI ✈️ crashing in Ahmedabad! News has become more gruesome after finding out that flight had crashed in BJMC Hostel & many MBBS students have also been injured!!!! We are monitoring the situation closely & are ready for any help!”
Eyewitnesses described the scene as apocalyptic, with one student stating, “We heard a thunderous blast, then the building shook. When we ran out, we saw fire and smoke everywhere. Our friends were trapped inside.”
As videos from the site continue to circulate on social platforms, officials have yet to release a complete list of casualties or survivors. Emergency medical teams have confirmed that injured students and passengers are being rushed to nearby hospitals, and a high-level investigation has been launched to determine the cause of the crash.
