AIADMK Turmoil Deepens As Speaker Rejects Disqualification Plea Against Rebel MLAs, Fresh Blow To EPS

Speaker’s Ruling Reshapes Political Battle

The political struggle inside the AIADMK took another dramatic turn on Tuesday after Tamil Nadu Assembly Speaker JCD Prabhakar declined requests seeking the disqualification of legislators accused of defying the party line during the recent confidence vote. The decision has handed immediate relief to rebel lawmakers and added to the challenges confronting party chief Edappadi K. Palaniswami.

The ruling follows weeks of political uncertainty triggered by the trust vote that helped Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay’s government secure a comfortable majority in the Assembly.

Trust Vote Exposed Deep Divisions

The confidence motion became a turning point for the opposition party after a significant section of AIADMK legislators voted in support of the ruling coalition, while another group remained loyal to the official party leadership.

The contrasting voting patterns publicly exposed divisions that had been simmering within the party for months. Political observers viewed the episode as one of the clearest signs yet of the growing power struggle inside the AIADMK.

Although some legislators have since returned to the Palaniswami camp, the events surrounding the trust vote have continued to cast a shadow over party unity.

Rival Camps Take Fight To Speaker

Following the Assembly showdown, competing factions approached the Speaker, each accusing the other of violating anti-defection provisions and seeking action against rival legislators.

After examining the petitions, the Speaker chose not to proceed with disqualification measures, effectively allowing the lawmakers to retain their Assembly membership for now.

The decision has eased immediate legal concerns for the rebel camp and prevented a fresh round of political uncertainty in the Assembly.

Merger Speculation Falls Short

Despite extending support to the ruling side, dissident legislators remain short of the numbers required under anti-defection provisions to formally merge with another political party.

This numerical reality has complicated efforts to redraw political alignments and has left the rebels operating in a grey zone between loyalty to their original party and support for the government.

Recent reports of a handful of legislators formally moving closer to the ruling establishment have nevertheless kept speculation alive about future realignments.

Rebels Reiterate Loyalty To AIADMK

Senior leaders associated with the dissident group have repeatedly denied any intention to split the party. They have insisted that their objective is not to weaken the AIADMK but to strengthen it and revive its political fortunes.

The rebel camp has also stressed that it has not sought ministerial positions or political rewards from the ruling coalition, rejecting allegations that its support was motivated by personal gain.

Fresh Challenge For Palaniswami

For Edappadi K. Palaniswami, the Speaker’s verdict represents another hurdle in his efforts to reassert control over the party. While the immediate threat of mass defections may have eased, the continuing presence of rival power centres within the AIADMK suggests that the battle for influence is far from over.
