New Delhi: Union Home Minister Amit Shah is set to arrive in Jammu and Kashmir on a two-day visit starting May 29, according to official sources. During his visit, Shah is scheduled to spend time in the Jammu division and may also visit Poonch district, where he is expected to meet the families affected by recent Pakistani mortar shelling on civilian areas.
This marks Shah’s first visit to the Union Territory since the Indian armed forces carried out ‘Operation Sindoor’, a series of precise, target-specific strikes against terrorist infrastructure located in Pakistan-occupied-Kashmir (PoK), including Muridke near Lahore, Bahawalpur, Kotli, and Muzaffarabad.
The retaliatory strikes were ordered in response to the April 22 terror attack in Pahalgam, in which 26 civilians were brutally murdered — 25 of them tourists and one a local pony ride operator. The attack, carried out by Pakistan-sponsored terrorists, involved the chilling segregation of civilians based on religion before opening fire. The local youth, Syed Adil Hussain, was killed after bravely attempting to disarm one of the terrorists while confronting them with the words that “no religion permitted the massacre of innocent civilians.”
The incident sparked widespread outrage across the country and led to spontaneous protests and shutdowns in the Valley, with residents — regardless of faith — condemning the attack and standing united against terrorism. Shah had earlier visited Baisaran meadow in Pahalgam on April 23, a day after the attack, in a strong message of solidarity and defiance.
Following India’s retaliatory action, Pakistan unleashed heavy mortar shelling across the LoC, targeting civilian zones. At least 28 civilians were killed, including 13 in Poonch district alone. The border districts of Poonch, Rajouri, Baramulla, Kupwara, and Bandipora have been among the worst hit in the ongoing hostilities.
