Dubai: In a tragic incident at the Dubai Air Show 2025, an Indian Air Force (IAF) Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) Tejas Mk1 crashed on Friday around 2 pm (local time), claiming the life of its pilot, Wing Commander Namansh Syal. The fighter jet went down while performing a complex low-altitude manoeuvre, shocking spectators and aviation experts worldwide.

Wing Commander Syal, in his mid-30s, hailed from Himachal Pradesh’s Kangra district. According to The Indian Express, his father, Jagan Nath Syal, learned of the crash in the most heartbreaking way—while searching YouTube for videos of his son’s air show performance.

Jagan Nath had last spoken to his son the previous day. “I last spoke to my son yesterday. He told me to watch his performance during the air show on TV channels or YouTube. Around 4 pm today, I was searching for videos of the ongoing air show in Dubai on YouTube when I saw reports about the plane crash. Immediately, I called my daughter-in-law, who is also a Wing Commander, to check what happened,” he told The Indian Express. Moments later, six IAF personnel arrived at their residence to confirm the devastating news.

The parents of the pilot had been staying in Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu, at their son’s home for the past few days and were taking care of his seven-year-old daughter. Syal’s wife, also an IAF officer, is currently undergoing training in Kolkata.

Footage of the crash showed the Tejas suddenly dropping altitude before nosediving into the ground at Al Maktoum International Airport, erupting into a massive fireball as thick black smoke rose over the venue.

The Indian Air Force expressed deep sorrow over the loss. In a post on X, the force stated: “IAF deeply regrets the loss of life and stands firmly with the bereaved family in this time of grief. A court of inquiry is being constituted to ascertain the cause of the accident.”

Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd (HAL), the manufacturer of the LCA Tejas, also conveyed its condolences, saying it was deeply saddened by the death of the “courageous IAF pilot.”

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh described the incident as deeply distressing. “My heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family. The nation stands firmly with the family in this tragic hour,” he wrote on X, calling the loss of the “brave and courageous IAF pilot” a moment of profound national grief.
