BMC has plans in place to start vaccination for children under the age of 18 years

Mumbai: As the Centre has approved the use of Covaxin vaccine for paediatric use, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has its plan ready for immunization of children below 18 years of age.

The Subject Expert Committee (SEC) of the Central Drugs Standard Control Organisation (CDSCO) on October 14 has granted emergency approval for use of Covaxin vaccine for vaccination of children in age group of 2 to 18 years of age. The usage shall be further reviewed by the Drugs Controller General of India (DCGI).

“The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has a plan for immunization of children below 18 years of age. There are 30 lakh children in Mumbai and we will start vaccinating them in 2-3 days as soon as detailed guidelines come from the central government”, said Suresh Kakani, Additional Municipal Commissioner, BMC

He further added, “A staff of 1,500 persons will be trained for immunization of young children. We will also provide training to doctors in private hospitals. Paediatric wards have already been set up and can be used if there are any reactions after immunization of young children. Also, a public awareness campaign will be held for vaccination of children.”
