Mumbai: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has decided to file a contempt of court petition against Standing Committee Chairman Yashwant Jadhav for not allowing BJP corporators to attend the meeting held on Wednesday in Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) headquarters.
A few days back also BJP corporators were not allowed to physically attend the meeting, after which they approached the Bombay High Court. The High Court gave its judgment in favour of BJP asking when malls, restaurants, school etc all are opened then why can’t physical meetings of the BMCs standing committee be held. Also, the court directed the standing committee that those who wanted to attend the meeting in person should be allowed and the court has asked BMC to take a decision within five days.
The BMC had gone to the court with the state government circular which states as per Covid-19 due to the possibility of the third wave of the Coronavirus people gathering and internal meeting should be prevented till the further orders as precautionary measures. The proposal to hold all the compulsory meetings of all the civic bodies in the State in person is under consideration of the Government and no decision has been received from the competent authority yet.
In this regard, a request was made before Justice Syed to seek clarification from the BMC regarding the above order. The honourable Justice Syed expressed the view that the order dated 05 October 2021 is clear and we should abide by it as written in the order.
On Wednesday, again Jadhav giving reference of the instructions of the state government did not allow BJP corporators to attend the meeting. Jadhav said even they had also demanded for meeting in person but they have to abide by the order of the state government.
“We have also written a letter to the government in this regard, meetings are being held as per the instructions of the state government and BJP should not make an issue out of this, ” said Standing Committee Chairman, Yashwant Jadhav.
The BJP has been taking an aggressive stance for the last few months demanding to hold physical meetings of the standing committee and other meetings of the civic body. The BJP corporators a few days ago have also staged protests outside mayor Kishori Pednekar’s office and also outside the office of Standing Committee chairman.
BJP will again move to the court to file a petition against Yashwant Jadhav for contempt of court order. “We will soon file a petition against the standing committee chairman, Yashwant Jadhav for contempt of court as despite the court’s order they are not holding physical meetings,” said Bhalchandra Shirsat.
Even leader of opposition Ravi Raja has also said that now when everything is open, then even standing and other meetings should also be held in person only but it seems BMC administration is not willing to organise physical meetings.
