Mumbai: A year old Nigerian girl child named Emma who had a congenital heart disease was successfully operated upon at Wadia Hospital in Parel, Mumbai by renowned cardiac surgeon Dr Biswas Panda on July 27. The surgery was possible as Rotary Club of Mumbai raised funds to manage the expenses for these surgeries.
Congenital heart disease occurs in only one percent of newborns worldwide, of which 70 percent of cases are resolved through a simple one-time heart surgery. But every year in Nigeria, out of 7 million babies born, about 56 thousand suffer from this disorder, who are referred for treatment to other countries including India as Nigeria does not have this facility.
Summan R Agrawal, a well-known women’s rights activist, and member of the Rotary Club of Mumbai Aces disclosed that this treatment of the one-year-old girl named Emma is the second such surgery of a Nigerian child at this hospital. During this surgery, Emma’s mother, who had come here from Nigeria for the surgery was present along with Summan Agrawal and District governor of Rotary club Dr. Rajendra Agrawal, chief coordinator Leena Shah, Assistant governor Deepa Goenka, and other office bearers and colleagues.
