First huge landslide in Kandivali suburb of Mumbai

Heavy rains lashing Mumbai since midnight brings city to its knees, several areas flooded

Mumbai: Due to heavy rainfall throughout the night on Monday, the financial capital of the country got paralysed. Mumbai’s life line local trains are partially operational due to heavy water logging. As a result a huge landslide occurred along the south Mumbai bound lane of Western Express Highway in Kandivali East early in the morning.

No casualties have been reported in the incident. Huge boulders blocked the section of the highway affecting Mumbai bound traffic which was later diverted from the adjacent Borivali bound lane.

The last year’s heavy rains had taken has caused huge loss of lives and damage of public properties. 

The city civic body, BMC on Tuesday morning said that only emergency services are to be function today due to heavy rains and all other offices to remain closed. 

The several areas like Hindmata, Dadar TT, SIES College, Gol Deol, Bhendi Bazar Junction, JJ Junction, Thakurdwar Naka, Shanmukhananda Hall, Shaikh Mistri Dargah Road, and Postal Colony in Mumbai have been flooded after extremely heavy rain in through the night and this morning. 

The Brihanmumbai Electricity Supply and Transport (BEST) bus services have been diverted in at least eight routes in various parts of Mumbai and the suburbs, the BEST PRO said. 

Due to landslide on the Western Express Highway, the roads in areas such as Goregaon, King Circle, Hindmata, Dadar, Shivaji Chowk, Shell Colony, Kurla ST Depot, Bandra Talkies, and Sion Road have been flooded.

The BMC has alerted citizen to remain away from sea as high tide expected at 12:47 pm with tidal waves of around 4.51 meters has been predicted due to the heavy rain. The IMD Mumbai had given red alert for 18-hours on Monday for Mumbai and its other adjacent districts like Thane, Pune, Raigad and Ratnagiri district of the state.
