Maharashtra ranks second in registering lower maternal mortality rate

Mumbai: Amidst rising cases of novel coronavirus reported from various parts of the state, a Sample Registration Survey (SRS) report published on Thursday has ranked Maharashtra second amongst all the states registering lower Maternal Mortality Rate (MMR). The finding comes as a big relief for the already harried people and the government.

The result is the outcome of the consistent efforts taken by the health department to stop the maternal mortality in the state. 

Kerala ranks first in the survey which has been done by the Registrar General of India for the year 2016-17. “The maternal mortality rate in Kerala has been recorded 43 per cent, whereas, Maharashtra’s MMR is 46 per cent”, a release issued by the state government said.

It is also for the first time that the gap in the percentage between the states which has stood first and second has been reduced.     

In last three years, the maternal mortality rate has declined over the years from 68 % to 61 %, 55 % and now settling down to 46 %. The top five states which have lowest maternal mortality rates in the country are: Kerala (43 %), Maharashtra (46 %), Tamil Nadu (60 %), Telangana (63 %) and Andhra Pradesh (74 %).     

According to the survey, the country’s maternal mortality rate has been recorded at 113 and has declined by 7.4 % as compared to what it was in 2015-17. 

Public Health Minister Rajesh Tope said, the state government is making every effort to contain the spread of Covid and the SRS report in which the state has been ranked 2nd came as a big relief. He attributed the success to the measures taken by the health department. He has praised and congratulated the officials of the health department. “Institutional births have increased in the state which has helped in stopping the deaths of the mothers”, Tope said.    

Special initiative is being implemented by the state government to take care of the pregnant women and newborn babies. There are 248 first referral unit has been started and institutional birth has been emphasised. Through the government’s ‘Maher’ scheme efforts are being taken to bring down maternal mortality rates in far flung areas of the state, principal secretary of health department, Dr. Pradeep Vyas has said.
