Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has highlighted India’s expansion of energy access under Prime Minister Narendra Modi, saying a larger number of people have gained access to energy during Modi’s tenure.
Albanese made the remarks while speaking at an Asia Society Policy Institute event, where he also discussed Australia’s growing relationship with India and its leadership.
The Australian leader pointed to India’s progress in expanding access to energy while referring to Modi’s role in the country’s development. His comments come at a time when energy security has become a major concern for countries around the world amid geopolitical tensions and disruptions to global supply chains.
Albanese Highlights Strong India-Australia Ties
Albanese also spoke about the relationship between Australia and India, describing Modi as a leader with whom Australia has developed close ties.
The two countries have expanded cooperation across several areas, including energy, critical minerals, defence, trade, technology and education. At their July 2026 annual summit in Melbourne, Modi and Albanese reviewed the progress of the India-Australia Comprehensive Strategic Partnership and discussed further cooperation in clean energy, critical minerals and other strategic sectors.
The growing partnership has also gained importance as both countries seek greater cooperation in areas linked to energy security and supply chains.
India Expands Energy Sources Amid Global Disruptions
India has increasingly focused on diversifying its energy supplies to reduce dependence on any single source.
Prime Minister Modi recently said India had expanded the number of countries from which it imports energy from 27 to 41. The government has also highlighted the development of strategic petroleum reserves and increased refining capacity as part of efforts to strengthen energy security.
The strategy has become particularly important amid disruptions affecting international energy markets. India imports significant quantities of crude oil, LNG and LPG, making reliable international supply routes important for maintaining domestic fuel availability.
India Focuses On Energy Security
The government has said that diversification of suppliers is intended to reduce excessive dependence on any one country or region.
Along with expanding import sources, India has been working on increasing storage capacity and strengthening domestic energy infrastructure. The government has also been promoting PNG connections and efforts to increase domestic gas production.
These measures have become part of India’s broader approach to improving resilience against international supply disruptions.
Global Energy Security Under Pressure
Albanese’s comments come amid continuing concerns over energy supplies and international shipping routes affected by geopolitical tensions.
Disruptions in major energy corridors can put pressure on fuel supplies and prices, particularly in countries that depend heavily on imports.
Against this backdrop, India’s efforts to diversify suppliers and maintain reserves have received attention as the country seeks to protect domestic energy availability from external shocks.
