Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated the Indian women’s cricket team after its impressive victory over Sri Lanka in the 2026 Women’s Asia Cup final, calling the achievement a “proud moment” for Indian cricket.
India defeated Sri Lanka by 72 runs in the final on Sunday to win the Women’s Asia Cup for a record-extending eighth time. The victory also gave India another major success against Sri Lanka in the tournament’s title clash.
PM Modi Praises Team’s Confidence and Consistency
Modi shared his message on X after India completed its successful campaign.
“A proud moment for Indian cricket! Congratulations to the Women’s team on winning the Asia Cup. Their confidence, consistency and remarkable spirit were on full display throughout the tournament. May this triumph inspire millions of youngsters across the country to play more and shine,” he said.
The Prime Minister’s message highlighted the team’s consistent performances throughout the competition and its ability to perform under pressure in the final.
India Dominates Sri Lanka in the Final
India produced a strong batting performance after being asked to set a target.
The opening pair of Shafali Verma and Smriti Mandhana gave India an excellent start with a 129-run partnership.
Shafali played an aggressive innings of 68 runs from 39 balls, while Mandhana contributed 59 from 39 deliveries.
Shafali’s innings included a particularly quick half-century. She reached the milestone in only 24 balls, making it the fastest fifty in the history of the Women’s Asia Cup.
Their partnership gave India a strong platform before Sri Lanka’s bowlers managed to fight back during the later stages of the innings.
India Finishes With 183 Runs
After the departure of the openers, India’s scoring rate slowed for a period.
Captain Harmanpreet Kaur was dismissed for 14 runs, while Richa Ghosh scored 17 before losing her wicket.
G Kamalini, playing her first match of the tournament, then provided a late boost. She scored 15 runs from just five balls to help India finish on 183/5.
The total gave India’s bowlers a substantial target to defend.
Shree Charani Leads India’s Bowling Attack
Sri Lanka struggled to match India’s batting performance while chasing the target.
Shree Charani was one of India’s main match-winners with the ball, taking four wickets. Deepti Sharma also contributed with two wickets as India’s bowling attack kept control of the chase.
India eventually dismissed Sri Lanka and secured a 72-run victory.
India Gets Revenge for 2024 Final Defeat
The victory was also significant because Sri Lanka had defeated India in the 2024 Asia Cup final.
India’s latest win allowed the team to regain the title and continue its strong record in Women’s Asia Cup finals.
The latest result was India’s sixth victory over Sri Lanka in Asia Cup finals across the tournament’s different formats and editions. Their history in the competition also includes the 2004 tournament, when India defeated Sri Lanka 5-0 in the two-team event.
Eighth Asia Cup Title for India
India’s latest triumph further strengthened its position as the most successful team in Women’s Asia Cup history.
The record eighth title also underlined India’s consistency in the regional tournament and highlighted the depth of its current squad.
