NCP (SP) MP Supriya Sule led a protest near Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) in Mumbai on Wednesday, targeting the government over rising prices of essential goods and the growing pressure on household budgets.
Sule was joined by party workers who raised slogans over the increasing cost of everyday items such as milk, vegetables, grains and other food products. Protesters also bought essential commodities at the spot to highlight how higher prices are affecting ordinary families.
Speaking during the protest, Sule said people were facing increasing financial pressure as they dealt with both taxes and rising food prices.
“It is challenging times. People are being taxed. Food inflation is out of the roof. How does one afford a meal in this country now?” she said.
Sule specifically mentioned the rising prices of milk, wheat, rice and sugar, questioning how working families would manage their daily expenses.
“How will common man, who is hardworking, live in this country?” she asked.
Sule raises concern ahead of festive season
Sule also pointed to the upcoming festive season, saying families would face additional financial pressure as celebrations approach.
“There are hardly eight days left for the Ganesh festival, and after that, other festivals are coming up back-to-back. If prices of essential goods continue to rise like this, how will a middle-class person afford them while also paying taxes?” she said.
She argued that inflation was not only hurting people in cities but was also creating difficulties for rural families and farmers.
‘How much justice has the farmer received?’
Sule also raised the issue of farmer debt and said the problems faced by agricultural families should not be ignored.
“The government made a big fuss about loan waivers, but in reality, how much justice has the farmer who grows food grains received?” she said.
She added that farmers who work to ensure food supplies deserve greater support, while people who migrate to cities for employment are also struggling with higher living costs.
Sule questions economic growth claims
The NCP (SP) leader also questioned the positive economic picture being presented by the government, saying the figures did not appear to match the concerns being raised by experts and ordinary citizens.
Referring to the country’s economic assessment, Sule said, “A different picture is being shown.”
She added, “That is not what the old governors and experts are saying. They are saying something completely different. So, the situation is very, very worrying.”
Police personnel were deployed around the protest site to maintain security as party workers demonstrated against rising prices.
