Tension briefly gripped the Parel-Chinchpokli area of Mumbai on Wednesday night, August 26, after a confrontation and stone-pelting were reported during an Eid Milad-un-Nabi procession. Police intervened to control the situation and deployed additional personnel across the area as a precaution.
The incident was reported near Laxmi Cottage in Parel. According to preliminary reports, an argument broke out after slogans were allegedly raised from both sides. The situation later escalated into a scuffle, with stone-pelting also reported.
Videos circulating on social media showed crowds gathering on the road as police moved in to disperse people. Some visuals also appeared to show officers chasing individuals and attempting to clear the area.
However, police officials said the situation was brought under control and appealed to people not to believe or circulate unverified claims.
Mumbai Police Joint Commissioner (Law and Order) Dr Manoj Sharma said senior officers were present at the location and confirmed that the situation had returned to normal.
“There is no such issue anymore. Senior officers are on-site, and the situation is completely calm. Please do not believe rumours,” Sharma told ANI.
Heavy Police Deployment In Parel-Chinchpokli
Following the clashes, police increased security in Parel, Chinchpokli and nearby areas to prevent any further escalation. Several roads leading towards the area were reportedly blocked temporarily as officers managed the crowd and traffic.
The Byculla-Lalbaug-Parel bridge was also closed to vehicular movement for a period following the incident, with motorists being diverted through alternative routes.
By Thursday morning, the situation appeared calm. Traffic had resumed and shops in the area were seen open, while police personnel remained deployed as a precaution.
Banners Allegedly Torn During Tension
A local resident told IANS that an initial scuffle was reported at around 7 pm, while tension reportedly increased around 9 pm near Laxmi Cottage.
The resident claimed that banners were allegedly torn and slogans were raised during the confrontation. He also said that some people were detained or arrested following the incident, while some injured individuals were taken to KEM Hospital for treatment.

Police Urge People Not To Spread Rumours
Authorities have urged residents to rely on official information instead of social media posts or unverified messages. Police presence has been maintained in the area to monitor developments and ensure that the situation remains peaceful.
The incident comes amid heightened public attention around religious processions in Mumbai. The resident also referred to an earlier incident in Mazgaon during the Mazgaoncha Morya procession, where eggs were allegedly thrown from a building while a Ganesh idol was being carried through the area.
Police have not indicated that the earlier incident was directly responsible for Wednesday night’s confrontation.
For now, authorities have maintained that the situation in Parel-Chinchpokli is under control and peaceful, while security personnel continue to monitor the area.
