Mumbai remained under a spell of heavy monsoon rain on Tuesday, with several parts of the city and adjoining suburbs witnessing intense showers since the early hours. As weather conditions deteriorated, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued an orange nowcast warning for Mumbai Suburban, forecasting thunderstorms, lightning, gusty winds and moderate rainfall.
The alert was issued at 11:24 am on August 11 and was valid until 2:24 pm. During this period, the IMD forecast rainfall of around 5–15 mm per hour, accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning. Gusty winds reaching 40–60 kmph were also expected in parts of Mumbai Suburban.
IMD Warns Of Difficult Travel Conditions
The weather warning comes as Mumbai continues to experience persistent monsoon activity. The combination of heavy showers and strong winds could result in waterlogging in low-lying and vulnerable locations, potentially affecting road traffic and daily commuting.
The weather department advised residents to check traffic and road conditions before stepping out and avoid unnecessary travel during intense spells of rainfall.
People have also been advised to stay away from trees, temporary structures and other potentially unsafe locations during thunderstorms and strong winds.
Heavy Rain Disrupts Mumbai Traffic
The latest spell began around 4 am, with rainfall affecting several areas across Mumbai, Thane and Navi Mumbai. Waterlogging was reported at multiple locations, slowing vehicular movement and adding to the difficulties faced by commuters.
The rain also affected suburban railway services. Harbour Line trains were running around 10–15 minutes late, while services on the Central Railway network were delayed by approximately 5–7 minutes.
With more rainfall expected, commuters have been urged to allow extra travel time and monitor official updates before beginning their journeys.
More Rain Expected In Maharashtra
The IMD has indicated that isolated parts of the region could continue to receive moderate to heavy showers. Maharashtra is also expected to witness another spell of rainfall from August 13, suggesting that unsettled weather could continue over the coming days.
Residents, particularly those living in areas prone to waterlogging, have been advised to remain alert and follow updates issued by the authorities as the monsoon remains active across Mumbai and neighbouring regions.
