Congress MP and Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi has intensified his criticism of Union Home Minister Amit Shah over the alleged police action against students protesting over the NEET (UG) examination.
Gandhi questioned Shah’s continued absence from Parliament, arguing that the Home Minister must answer for the violence reported during the protest in Delhi.
According to Gandhi, the students were demonstrating peacefully when the police allegedly used tear gas, pellet guns and batons against them. He claimed that several protesters, including young women and minors, suffered injuries during the crackdown.

In a post on X, Gandhi accused the government of responding to students’ concerns with force instead of addressing their questions about their future.”Young women beaten by policemen, many injured on their private parts. Minors with broken bones. This is how the Modi government answers a question,” Gandhi said.
He also questioned why Amit Shah had not appeared in Parliament for nearly 20 days to address the Opposition’s concerns.”And the Home Minister? Nearly 20 days and Amit Shah has not come to Parliament to answer for it. Every Opposition motion for a discussion has been rejected.”
Gandhi called for a Supreme Court-monitored investigation into the incident and said the Congress would continue pressing the government until those responsible were held accountable.
‘Silence Is Approval Of Violence’: Gandhi Targets Shah
The Congress leader has repeatedly attacked Shah over the alleged police crackdown linked to the July 20 student protest in the national capital.
Gandhi has argued that Shah, as Union Home Minister, bears responsibility for the actions of the police even if he was not directly involved in the operation.
In another strongly worded statement, he presented two possibilities regarding Shah’s role in the incident.”There are only two possibilities. First, he (Shah) authorised the attack on the students — in which case he is culpable. Second, he had no idea that it was taking place — which means that he is entirely incompetent,” Gandhi said.
He added that either scenario placed responsibility on the Home Minister.”Either way, as Home Minister, what happened on that day is his responsibility, and he must resign.”
Congress Says Fight Will Continue
Gandhi also alleged that no independent inquiry had been ordered and criticised the government for rejecting Opposition demands for a parliamentary discussion.
The Congress leader further claimed that the incident had damaged Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s political image and accused the government of using its “propaganda machinery” to counter criticism.
The confrontation between the Congress and the Centre over the student protests is now escalating, with Gandhi demanding a judicially monitored probe while continuing to seek answers from Shah in Parliament.
