Raghav Chadha Meets PM Modi After Sukhbir Badal: Is BJP’s Big Punjab Poll Plan Taking Shape?

BJP Rajya Sabha MP Raghav Chadha’s meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday has triggered fresh political speculation in Punjab, particularly as the state prepares for Assembly elections.

Chadha described the interaction as a memorable and informative one but did not disclose the issues discussed during his meeting with the Prime Minister. The meeting also came a day after Shiromani Akali Dal president Sukhbir Singh Badal met Modi, adding another layer to the political developments unfolding in the poll-bound state.

Raghav Chadha Calls Meeting With PM Modi ‘Enriching Interaction’

After meeting Modi, Chadha took to social media and described the discussion as a significant experience.”Had the privilege of meeting Prime Minister Narendra Modi. A detailed and enriching interaction. Deeply grateful for his generous time and for the opportunity to benefit from his insights and guidance,” Chadha said.

While Chadha did not provide details about the conversation, reports have indicated that the political situation in Punjab was among the matters discussed.

Why Is Chadha’s Meeting With Modi Significant?

The meeting assumes importance because Chadha is a Rajya Sabha member from Punjab and has now emerged as an important BJP figure in the state following his political shift from the Aam Aadmi Party.

Chadha was among seven AAP MPs who joined the BJP earlier this year. Six of the seven MPs were from Punjab, making the move particularly significant for the BJP’s strategy in the state.

His political experience in Punjab could also make him an important campaigner as the BJP looks to expand its footprint ahead of the Assembly elections.

From AAP Strategist To BJP Leader

Chadha was associated with the AAP from its early days and played a prominent strategic role during the party’s rise in Punjab.

Although he did not contest the 2022 Assembly election, he was involved in the party’s election campaign as AAP went on to win a sweeping majority.

His move to the BJP therefore marked a major shift in Punjab’s political landscape, particularly for the AAP, which currently governs the state.

Chadha And Badal Meetings Fuel Alliance Speculation

The timing of Chadha’s meeting with Modi has also attracted attention because Sukhbir Singh Badal met the Prime Minister just a day earlier.

The development has renewed speculation about whether the BJP and SAD could explore a fresh political understanding before the Punjab polls.

The two parties had been longstanding allies before their relationship broke down in 2020 over differences surrounding the now-repealed farm laws. Since then, both parties have contested elections separately.

With the BJP attempting to strengthen its position in Punjab and the SAD seeking to regain lost political ground, any possible rapprochement between the former allies could significantly reshape the electoral contest.

Can Chadha Strengthen BJP’s Punjab Campaign?

Chadha’s political experience, understanding of Punjab’s electoral landscape and presence among urban voters could potentially make him a valuable asset for the BJP.

The party has traditionally faced challenges in building a broader support base in Punjab, particularly among sections of urban and business voters.

Whether Chadha receives a prominent role in the BJP’s Punjab election strategy remains to be seen. However, his meeting with Modi, coming immediately after Badal’s interaction with the Prime Minister, has certainly intensified attention on the BJP’s preparations for the upcoming state polls.
