The Election Commission has sought an explanation from the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) over a series of amendments made to the party’s constitution earlier this year, directing party president Sunetra Pawar to furnish supporting documents related to the changes.
In an official communication, the poll panel said it had reviewed the amendments introduced to several provisions of the NCP constitution following the party’s national convention held in February 2026. However, it noted that the documents submitted by the party only supported changes made to one article, while records for other amendments were missing.
According to the Commission, amendments were made to Articles 6, 7, 12, 18(i), 32 and 36 of the party constitution. It observed that the resolution submitted by the NCP referred only to the amendment concerning Article 18(i) and did not contain supporting resolutions or documents for the remaining changes.
In its notice, the Election Commission stated, “However, the supporting document furnished by the party, i.e., the Resolution passed in the National Convention held on 26.02.2026, mentions amendment to only Article 18(1).”
The Commission further directed the party leadership to submit the relevant resolutions or any other documents relating to the amendments made to Articles 6, 7, 12, 32 and 36 for examination before the revised party constitution could be considered.
“In view of the above, it is requested that a copy of the relevant Resolution and/or other supporting documents in respect of the amendments made to Articles 6, 7, 12, 32 and 36 also be furnished for consideration of the amended Constitution by the Commission,” the letter added.
The notice comes months after Sunetra Pawar assumed charge as the national president of the NCP following a unanimous decision taken during the party’s national convention in February 2026. Party delegates and senior leaders had backed her elevation, marking a leadership transition after the death of former Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar in a plane crash earlier this year.
Ajit Pawar, a senior Maharashtra politician and one of the party’s tallest leaders, died in a chartered aircraft crash on January 28, 2026, while travelling from Mumbai. Following his demise, the party initiated organisational restructuring, culminating in Sunetra Pawar’s appointment as its national chief.
The Election Commission’s latest communication does not question the validity of the amendments but seeks complete documentation before taking them on record, with the NCP now expected to respond by submitting the required resolutions and supporting material.
