BJP MP Kangana Ranaut on Tuesday defended the Delhi Police’s handling of the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) protest near Parliament, claiming that Members of Parliament were left stranded inside the Parliament complex as demonstrators advanced towards the area. She praised the police for preventing the situation from escalating and said the force acted as a protective shield for lawmakers.
Kangana Describes Tense Moments Inside Parliament
Speaking to reporters in Delhi, Ranaut said the atmosphere inside Parliament turned tense as security concerns mounted during the protest. According to her, the Parliament gates were shut and legislators were unable to leave even after the proceedings were adjourned.
Describing the situation, she said, “All of you were inside and saw how everyone was panicking. The gates were closed, parliamentarians were trapped inside, and even after the House was adjourned, we could not move. You saw how the mob was trying to attack. At one point, we were all scared that they might attack us. I appreciate the Delhi Police. They acted as a shield for us. There was stone-pelting and some injuries, but the general public did not suffer any loss. For that, I am very grateful to them.”
Protest Triggered Heavy Security Deployment
Her remarks came a day after the CJP’s ‘Chalo Sansad’ march witnessed clashes between protesters and security personnel near Parliament Street. Police used barricades, tear gas and other crowd-control measures after demonstrators attempted to move towards Parliament despite restrictions.
Delhi Police has stated that more than 100 police and paramilitary personnel sustained injuries during the violence, while several protesters were detained. Protest organisers, however, have alleged that excessive force was used against demonstrators.
Political Reactions Continue
The confrontation has intensified the political debate surrounding the CJP-led agitation over alleged NEET examination irregularities. While the BJP has defended the police response as necessary to protect Parliament and maintain public order, Opposition leaders and protest organisers have questioned the handling of the demonstration and demanded accountability over the alleged use of force.
