Speaking during an interview with Rediff, Aamir said his marriages were conducted under civil law and did not involve any religious conversion. “Neither Gauri, Kiran nor Reena converted their religion, as we had civil marriages. Gauri is not even Hindu, she is Christian, and not even a practising Christian at that. Life is getting more comical as time passes,” he said.
The actor explained that his family has always embraced interfaith relationships and that marriages across different religions have long been accepted within his household. He pointed out that both his sisters are married to Hindu men, his daughter is married to a Hindu, and his cousin Mansoor is married to a Christian, saying this reflects the inclusive values of his family.
The remarks come amid criticism from some political leaders and social media users following Aamir’s marriage to Gauri Spratt. Maharashtra minister Nitesh Rane had questioned the marriage in the context of the “Love Jihad” debate, while reports also stated that a cleric from Uttar Pradesh issued a fatwa objecting to the marriage, citing religious grounds.
