India Condemns Strait of Hormuz Vessel Attacks, Summons Iranian Envoy After Indian Seafarer Killed

India on Tuesday issued a strong condemnation of the recent attacks on commercial vessels passing through the Strait of Hormuz, describing them as unacceptable assaults on civilian shipping and international maritime security. The diplomatic response came after missile strikes on two UAE-flagged merchant vessels claimed the life of an Indian seafarer and left several others injured.

The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) also summoned the Deputy Chief of Mission of the Iranian Embassy in New Delhi to formally register India’s protest over the attacks, signalling New Delhi’s growing concern over the deteriorating security situation in West Asia.

India Raises Strong Objection Over Maritime Attacks

Expressing deep concern, the MEA said violence against merchant ships and civilian crew members threatens the safety of international sea routes and disrupts free navigation through one of the world’s busiest energy corridors.

India stressed that commercial shipping must not become a target during regional conflicts and called for the immediate restoration of safe and uninterrupted maritime trade in accordance with international law.

Indian Crew Members Among the Victims

According to the government, the two UAE-registered vessels — MT Al Bahiyah and MT Mombasa — had a combined crew of 46, including 30 Indian nationals.

Officials confirmed that:

  • One Indian sailor aboard MT Al Bahiyah lost his life.
  • Another Indian crew member on the same vessel suffered injuries.
  • Of the 18 Indians aboard MT Mombasa, nine were injured.
  • Two of the injured are reported to be in serious condition.

The government conveyed condolences to the family of the deceased seafarer and wished a speedy recovery to those injured.

Indian Mission Coordinating Assistance

The MEA said Indian diplomatic missions in the United Arab Emirates are closely coordinating with local authorities to ensure medical assistance, welfare support and other necessary help for the affected Indian crew members.

Officials added that every possible effort is being made to assist the injured sailors and remain in contact with their families.

Call for Immediate De-escalation

Alongside its diplomatic protest, India urged all parties involved in the escalating West Asia conflict to avoid further violence and return to dialogue.

The government warned that continued attacks on civilian vessels and critical infrastructure pose a serious threat to regional stability, global trade and international energy supply chains, particularly through the strategically important Strait of Hormuz.

India reiterated that ensuring secure and unhindered navigation through international waterways remains essential for global commerce and called for an immediate end to hostilities.
