‘Ladki Bahin Yojana Is for Poor Women’: Maharashtra Minister Shirsat Explains Why Ineligible Beneficiaries Are Being Dropped

Verification Drive Targets Ineligible Beneficiaries

The Maharashtra government has initiated a verification drive under the Mukhyamantri Majhi Ladki Bahin Yojana to ensure that only eligible women receive financial assistance. Speaking in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, Minister Sanjay Shirsat said the scheme was introduced for women from economically weaker sections who do not have an independent source of income. “The Ladki Bahin Yojana is meant for women from economically weaker sections who do not earn and stay at home. However, people who own four-wheelers and even income tax payers have also become beneficiaries under the scheme. Their names are now being removed,” he said, adding that the government is taking action against those who do not meet the eligibility criteria.

Government Identifying Irregularities

Shirsat said the verification exercise has revealed a substantial number of ineligible beneficiaries. Referring to reports that around 14 lakh people had been identified during the scrutiny, he said, “As you mentioned, around 14 lakh people had been included, and such ineligible beneficiaries are being excluded. The scheme has certainly put a burden on the state treasury, but the government is identifying such irregularities.” He added that the objective is to prevent misuse of public funds while ensuring genuine beneficiaries continue to receive support.

‘Scheme Will Continue,’ Assures Minister

Amid concerns that the verification exercise could affect the future of the programme, Shirsat dismissed speculation that the welfare scheme would be withdrawn. “We will not allow the Ladki Bahin Yojana to be discontinued. The scheme will continue,” he said, reiterating the Maharashtra government’s commitment to the flagship initiative.
