India has strongly denounced the attack on a Cyprus-flagged merchant vessel near the coast of Oman after it came under fire in waters close to the Strait of Hormuz, leaving one Indian sailor missing while triggering fresh concerns over maritime security in the region.
The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) confirmed that 11 Indian nationals were among the crew aboard the commercial ship. While 10 crew members have been rescued safely, search operations are continuing for the missing Indian seafarer.
India Coordinates Rescue Efforts With Oman
The MEA said the Indian Embassy in Muscat is working closely with Omani authorities to assist in rescue efforts and provide all necessary support to the affected crew. The government also thanked Oman for its prompt response and cooperation in the ongoing operation.
Officials said the situation is being monitored closely, with Indian diplomatic missions remaining in constant touch with local authorities.
Merchant Vessel Hit Near Strait of Hormuz
The merchant vessel reportedly caught fire after being struck near the Omani coastline, forcing crew members to abandon ship.
Iran claimed the strike was intended as a “warning shot,” alleging that the vessel was navigating through an unauthorised route shortly before Tehran announced restrictions in the Strait of Hormuz. Iranian authorities also warned that any retaliatory military action would invite a strong response.
Regional Tensions Escalate
The incident has further intensified the already volatile situation in the Gulf region.
Following the attack, the United States reportedly carried out another round of military strikes targeting Iranian military infrastructure, including missile launch sites, drone facilities, naval assets, ammunition depots and surveillance systems. US Central Command said the latest operation targeted around 140 military locations, adding to hundreds of strikes conducted over recent days.
India Calls for Peace and Safe Maritime Navigation
Reacting to the developments, India urged all parties to exercise restraint and pursue diplomatic dialogue to prevent further escalation.
The MEA reiterated that commercial vessels and civilian infrastructure must remain protected and stressed the importance of ensuring uninterrupted navigation through international sea routes in accordance with international law.
India also expressed concern over the growing risks to global shipping in one of the world’s busiest maritime corridors.
