Mumbai Sees Month’s Rainfall In Just Four Days
Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Monday reviewed the state’s flood and rain situation at a high-level Disaster Management meeting, stating that Mumbai has witnessed an exceptionally intense spell of monsoon rainfall, receiving nearly a month’s quota of rain within just four days.
Addressing the media after the meeting, Fadnavis said, “We held a meeting of the Disaster Management today to review the situation. Mumbai has received one month’s rain quota in just four days. BMC has continuously worked to ensure there is no waterlogging. Mumbai Metro train service is operating normally, while there are a few disruptions on the railway network. Buses too are operating normally.”
Strong Winds Trigger Tree Falls Across Mumbai
The Chief Minister said powerful winds accompanying the rain had caused widespread damage across the city, leading to hundreds of tree-fall incidents.
“Yesterday, we experienced unprecedented strong and intense winds. This has led to the falling of nearly 300 trees yesterday. Winds of 50-70 kmph are expected to hit the city today. This is the reason we have declared work from home today and appealed to people not to step outside of their homes today,” Fadnavis said.
Cloudburst Alert Issued For Nashik-Triambakeshwar Region
Fadnavis also warned of severe weather in northern Maharashtra, saying disaster response teams have been repositioned to tackle any emergency.
“There is an alert for a cloudburst in the area between Nashik and Triambakeshwar for tomorrow. NDRF and SDTF have been redeployed accordingly,” he said.
High Alert Till July 8, Restoration Work Underway
The Chief Minister said the administration will remain on maximum alert over the next few days as heavy rainfall is expected to continue across several districts.
“Till 8th July, intensity of rains will remain high. District Administrations have been put on high alert. Efforts are underway to restore the Mumbai-Goa and Mumbai-Pune expressway,” Fadnavis added.
Authorities have urged citizens to avoid unnecessary travel, follow official advisories and cooperate with emergency services as Maharashtra continues to battle one of the most intense monsoon spells of the season.
