As torrential monsoon showers continued to batter Mumbai, authorities on Monday announced a series of precautionary measures to minimise public movement across the city. With the India Meteorological Department (IMD) placing Mumbai under a Red Alert, the State Disaster Management Authority (SDMA) has advised private companies to allow employees to work from home wherever possible, while non-essential government and semi-government offices will operate only for half a day.
The decision comes amid forecasts of extremely heavy rainfall, strong winds and the possibility of widespread disruption across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region.
SDMA Issues Workplace Advisory
In view of the deteriorating weather conditions, the SDMA urged private establishments to adopt work-from-home arrangements wherever operationally feasible.
For government departments, only offices providing essential public services will continue normal operations, while employees in non-essential government and semi-government offices have been granted a half-day to reduce travel during the peak rainfall period.
The advisory aims to reduce congestion on roads and public transport while ensuring public safety.
IMD Warns Of Extremely Heavy Rain And Strong Winds
The IMD has upgraded Mumbai’s weather warning to a Red Alert, forecasting heavy to very heavy rainfall with isolated spells of extremely heavy showers.
The weather department has also warned of gusty winds reaching 70–80 kmph, increasing the risk of flooding, falling trees, landslides and damage to weak structures.
Officials cautioned that low-lying areas could experience severe waterlogging, while rivers and drainage channels may overflow if rainfall continues at the current intensity.
Transport And Civic Services May Be Affected
Authorities have warned that persistent rainfall could disrupt road, rail, air and ferry services across the region.
Rough sea conditions are also expected along the Konkan coast, while interruptions to essential civic services such as electricity and water supply cannot be ruled out if weather conditions worsen.
Emergency agencies remain on standby to respond to incidents across the city.
BMC Urges Citizens To Stay Indoors
The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has appealed to residents to avoid unnecessary travel and remain indoors unless absolutely necessary.
Citizens have been advised to stay away from beaches, flooded roads, electric poles, hoardings, old buildings and trees that may become unstable during strong winds. Motorists have also been asked not to park vehicles beneath trees to reduce the risk of damage.
Emergency Teams Deployed Across Mumbai
According to civic authorities, around 15,000 personnel from the BMC and various government agencies have been deployed across Mumbai to respond to emergencies, clear waterlogged roads and monitor vulnerable locations.
Senior officials are continuously reviewing the situation and coordinating relief operations as weather conditions evolve.
The BMC has also urged residents to rely only on official updates, avoid spreading rumours and contact the civic helpline 1916 in case of emergencies.
