Mumbai On Red Alert: Will Schools Remain Closed On Monday? IMD Warns Of More Heavy Rain As Monsoon Chaos Continues

As relentless monsoon showers continue to batter Mumbai and surrounding districts, thousands of parents and students are waiting for one crucial announcement—will schools remain open on Monday? With the India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasting more intense rainfall over the weekend, authorities are closely monitoring the situation before taking a final call.

IMD Warns Of Extremely Heavy Rain

The IMD has issued a Red Alert for Mumbai, Thane, Palghar and Raigad, warning that several areas could witness extremely heavy rainfall between July 4 and July 6. Officials have advised residents to avoid unnecessary travel and remain alert as the possibility of flooding, waterlogging and disruption to daily life remains high.

Large parts of Mumbai have already recorded significant rainfall over the past 24 hours, with many low-lying areas witnessing water accumulation and traffic disruptions.

Parents Await Decision On Monday’s School Schedule

While schools in several neighbouring regions have already been shut due to the worsening weather, no official announcement has yet been made regarding schools in Mumbai for Monday.

Authorities have urged parents not to rely on rumours or unofficial messages and instead wait for updates from the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) and respective local administrations.

In neighbouring districts, precautionary closures have already been ordered. Educational institutions in Thane, Navi Mumbai and Palghar remained closed on Saturday, while Palghar district has extended the closure of schools, colleges and Anganwadi centres until July 6. Schools within the Kalyan-Dombivli Municipal Corporation limits have also remained shut, with further decisions expected after reviewing weather conditions.

Government Urges Public To Stay Alert

Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has appealed to citizens to remain cautious as heavy rain is expected to continue. Civic authorities have also asked residents to use emergency helpline numbers whenever necessary and avoid venturing into flooded areas.

Disaster management teams remain on standby as officials continue to monitor rivers, drains and vulnerable locations across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region.

Rain Leaves Trail Of Destruction

The ongoing spell of heavy rain has already resulted in multiple emergencies across Mumbai. Emergency teams have responded to incidents involving fallen trees, damaged structures and electrical faults.

Among the most tragic incidents, an 11-year-old student lost his life after a tree crashed onto a school bus in Chembur. In another case, a person died after part of a balcony collapsed in South Mumbai. Railway services also faced disruptions after an overhead wire snapped on the Harbour Line, affecting thousands of commuters.

Official Update Awaited

As heavy rainfall is expected to continue over the next two days, the decision on whether schools in Mumbai will remain closed on Monday is likely to depend on the latest weather assessment. Authorities are expected to issue an official announcement if conditions worsen.

Until then, parents and students have been advised to closely follow updates from the IMD and local civic authorities before making travel plans.
