Indian Armed Forces Get New Leadership as Army and Air Force Announce Top Command Appointments

India’s armed forces have entered a new phase of leadership with a series of senior-level appointments in the Indian Army and the Indian Air Force, as the military undertakes its routine succession process. The changes place new commanders in some of the country’s most critical operational positions at a time when the armed forces continue to focus on border security, military modernisation and enhanced combat preparedness.

Lt Gen Dhiraj Seth Takes Charge as Army Chief

Lieutenant General Dhiraj Seth formally assumed office as the Chief of the Army Staff (COAS) on June 30, becoming the new head of the Indian Army.

He takes over the leadership of the force during a period when the Army is strengthening its operational capabilities, advancing modernisation projects and maintaining high vigilance along India’s sensitive borders.

As Army Chief, Lt Gen Seth will oversee the overall functioning of the Army and guide its strategic planning, operational readiness and future capability development.

Lt Gen Sandeep Jain to Become Vice Chief of Army Staff

The leadership transition will continue on July 1, when Lieutenant General Sandeep Jain assumes charge as the Vice Chief of the Army Staff (VCOAS).

In his new role, he will be responsible for supervising several key areas, including military operations, strategic planning, force modernisation and capability enhancement across the Army.

The Vice Chief plays a crucial role in coordinating operational planning and implementing long-term defence reforms.

Changes in Key Army Commands

The reshuffle has also brought changes to two major operational commands of the Indian Army.

Lieutenant General Mohit Malhotra has been appointed the General Officer Commanding-in-Chief (GOC-in-C) of the South Western Command, while Lieutenant General Rajesh Pushkar has taken over as the General Officer Commanding-in-Chief of the Southern Command.

Both commands are strategically important and play a key role in maintaining operational preparedness across their respective areas of responsibility.

New Commander for Fire and Fury Corps

In another significant appointment, Lieutenant General Madanraj Pande has taken charge of the Fire and Fury Corps at Leh in Ladakh, succeeding Lieutenant General Hitesh Bhalla.

The Fire and Fury Corps is one of the Indian Army’s most strategically significant formations, responsible for safeguarding India’s frontiers in the Ladakh sector.

The corps plays a vital role in maintaining security and operational readiness along the northern borders.

Air Force Also Sees Leadership Transition

The Indian Air Force has also announced a key change in its senior leadership.

Air Marshal Ashutosh Dixit is scheduled to assume office as the Vice Chief of the Air Staff (VCAS) on July 1, succeeding Air Marshal Nagesh Kapoor.

A highly experienced fighter pilot, Air Marshal Dixit will assist in overseeing the Air Force’s operational planning, force development and future modernisation initiatives.

Routine Succession to Strengthen Operational Readiness

The latest appointments are part of the armed forces’ regular leadership succession process, ensuring continuity in command across the Army and Air Force.

The changes come as India’s military continues to prioritise combat readiness, technological modernisation and infrastructure development while maintaining a high level of preparedness along the country’s strategically important borders.

With experienced officers taking charge of key positions, the armed forces are expected to continue their focus on strengthening national security and enhancing India’s defence capabilities in an evolving regional security environment.
