Heavy overnight rainfall drenched Mumbai and its neighbouring regions, disrupting normal life and leaving several roads waterlogged by Monday morning. Intense showers affected both South Mumbai and the suburbs, while Navi Mumbai, Thane and Bhiwandi also witnessed flooding at several locations following continuous rain through the night.
Several Parts of Mumbai Witness Waterlogging
Moderate to heavy rainfall was recorded across South Mumbai, including Marine Lines, Prabhadevi, Byculla and Lalbaug. The western and eastern suburbs such as Andheri, Malad, Jogeshwari, Mulund, Kanjurmarg and Kurla also received heavy showers, resulting in water accumulation at several low-lying stretches.
Morning visuals from Marine Drive showed rough sea conditions with high waves crashing against the promenade as rain continued across parts of the city. Wet roads and reduced visibility were also reported along the Mumbai Coastal Road.
Traffic movement slowed considerably during the morning rush hour, especially near the Vile Parle Flyover, where moderate rain affected the flow of vehicles. The Andheri subway was among the worst-hit locations after rainwater accumulated overnight.
Traffic Restored After Overnight Closures
Due to severe waterlogging, Mumbai Traffic Police temporarily suspended vehicular movement at the Andheri Subway in D.N. Nagar and the Malad Subway in Dindoshi late Sunday night.
However, by around 8 am on Monday, authorities confirmed that water had receded sufficiently, allowing traffic to resume at both locations. Officials said vehicular movement had returned to normal after the roads were cleared.
Neighbouring Areas Also Affected
The overnight downpour also impacted neighbouring cities. Several roads in Navi Mumbai’s Vashi area were submerged, affecting traffic and causing inconvenience to commuters during the morning hours.
In Bhiwandi, nearly an hour of heavy rain led to waterlogging in residential neighbourhoods, markets and major roads, disrupting daily activities and creating difficulties for residents and shopkeepers.
IMD Forecasts More Rain, Yellow Alert in Place
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted light to moderate rainfall across Mumbai and Thane from June 29 to July 2.
A yellow alert has been issued for the four-day period, with the weather department warning of thunderstorms accompanied by lightning, moderate rainfall at isolated places and gusty winds reaching speeds of 40 to 50 kmph.
Authorities have advised residents to remain cautious, particularly in low-lying areas that are vulnerable to flooding during periods of intense rainfall.
Air Quality Remains Good Despite Rain
Even as heavy showers lashed the city, Mumbai’s air quality remained in the ‘good’ category on Monday morning.
The city’s overall Air Quality Index (AQI) stood at 42, which falls within the ‘good’ range according to standard AQI classifications, indicating satisfactory air quality despite the prevailing monsoon conditions.
