12 Workers Freed from Muzaffarnagar Factory; Rahul and Priyanka Gandhi Call for Harsh Punishment for Accused

A shocking bonded labour case uncovered in Uttar Pradesh’s Muzaffarnagar district has triggered nationwide outrage after authorities rescued a group of workers who were allegedly confined, assaulted and forced to work under brutal conditions for months.

The incident has drawn strong reactions from Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi, who described the allegations as a serious attack on human dignity and demanded strict action against those responsible.

Daring Escape Uncovers Alleged Abuse

The case came to light after a worker reportedly escaped from a manufacturing unit in Mandi village by scaling the factory’s boundary wall and reaching a nearby police station.

Following his complaint, police conducted a rescue operation and freed 12 labourers, including minors, from the premises. Investigators believe some workers may have been held there for nearly 18 months.

Officials said the rescued individuals belonged to several states, including Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Rajasthan, Jharkhand, Uttarakhand, Haryana and Chhattisgarh, while some were reportedly from Nepal.

Victims Allege Months of Torture

According to investigators, the workers displayed signs of prolonged physical abuse, including fractures, cuts, bruises and other injuries.

Authorities alleged that the labourers were forced to work without receiving promised wages and were subjected to severe mistreatment. Reports suggest they were given inadequate food and faced violent punishment if they resisted or attempted to leave.

The disturbing details emerging from the investigation have sparked widespread anger on social media and among human rights activists.

Rahul Gandhi Calls Incident ‘Assault on Human Dignity’

Reacting to the rescue operation, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi condemned the alleged treatment of the workers and demanded justice for the victims.

“In addition to forcing them to work without wages, the workers were bitten by dogs, stabbed with spears, whipped, and fed animal fodder. This is an assault on human dignity—victims must receive justice along with rehabilitation, and the perpetrators the harshest possible punishment,” Rahul Gandhi wrote on X.

He further argued that the incident reflected deeper economic challenges and questioned why vulnerable workers continue to fall into exploitative situations.

“We must also ask why workers end up trapped in such dangerous situations due to dire compulsions. When jobs dry up, incomes stall, and safeguards like MGNREGA and labor laws meant for the most vulnerable sections are weakened, desperation only mounts. Those with no other options or protections become easy prey to such exploitation,” he said.

Priyanka Gandhi Seeks Exemplary Punishment

Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi also expressed outrage over the allegations and demanded strict legal action.

“Strict action must be taken in the matter, and the guilty must be given such punishment that it sets a precedent,” she said.

Highlighting the allegations made by rescued workers, she added:

“Instead of being paid wages, they were subjected to horrific torture. They were fed dry rotis and animal fodder. They were beaten with sharp weapons and whips. They were made to be bitten by dogs.”

Police Action and Arrests

Police have registered multiple cases, including charges related to human trafficking, bonded labour, child labour and other serious offences.

According to officials, factory supervisor Shiva Tyagi and Pradeep Balyan have been arrested, while factory owner Ankit Balyan remains absconding. Search operations are underway to trace him.

Authorities are continuing their investigation to determine the full extent of the alleged racket and identify whether more victims were subjected to similar treatment.

Growing Demand for Accountability

The revelations have reignited concerns about bonded labour and worker exploitation in parts of the country. Rights groups and political leaders have called for stronger monitoring mechanisms and faster rehabilitation of rescued workers.

As investigations continue, the case has emerged as one of the most disturbing labour exploitation incidents reported in recent years, with demands growing for swift justice and stringent punishment for those found guilty.
