Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday conveyed India’s condolences and support to Venezuela after two powerful earthquakes struck the South American nation, killing at least 32 people and leaving hundreds injured.
The devastating back-to-back tremors caused extensive destruction, damaged key infrastructure and triggered a large-scale emergency response across the country.
PM Modi Offers Condolences and Assistance
Reacting to the disaster, Prime Minister Modi expressed grief over the loss of lives and assured Venezuela of India’s support during the crisis.
“Deeply saddened by the devastation caused by the severe earthquakes in Venezuela. On behalf of the people of India, I extend our heartfelt condolences to the Government and people of Venezuela, especially to the families who have lost their loved ones,” he wrote.
The Prime Minister also wished a quick recovery for those injured in the tragedy and reiterated India’s readiness to help.
“We pray for the speedy recovery of those injured and stand in solidarity with all those affected during this difficult time. India stands ready to extend all possible assistance,” he added.
Twin Earthquakes Cause Massive Damage
According to reports, the disaster unfolded when two powerful earthquakes measuring 7.2 and 7.5 magnitude struck within minutes of each other.
The first quake hit near the coastal town of Morón at a depth of 22 kilometres, while the second and stronger tremor followed shortly after from a shallower depth of 10 kilometres. The impact was felt across multiple regions and even in neighbouring countries.
Buildings collapsed, roads suffered damage and thousands of residents rushed outdoors as panic spread through affected areas.
Death Toll Climbs, Rescue Operations Continue
Authorities said at least 32 people have lost their lives while more than 700 others have been injured. Rescue teams remain engaged in intensive search operations as concerns grow that more victims could still be trapped under debris.
Emergency personnel, security forces and volunteers have been deployed across affected zones to assist survivors and provide urgent medical care.
Airport Shut, Schools Closed
The earthquakes also severely affected public infrastructure. Acting President Delcy Rodríguez confirmed that Simón Bolívar International Airport sustained significant damage and has been temporarily shut down.
She further announced the suspension of classes for several days as authorities focus on emergency response and public safety measures.
President Appeals for Calm and Unity
Addressing the nation after the disaster, Rodríguez urged citizens to remain calm despite the challenging situation.
“We urge our population to remain calm,” Rodríguez said. “We urge unity.”
She also appealed to healthcare workers nationwide to report for duty and assist hospitals struggling to cope with the large number of injured patients.
One of Venezuela’s Strongest Earthquakes in Decades
Experts have described the twin tremors as among the most powerful earthquakes to strike Venezuela in more than a century. The scale of destruction has raised fears that casualty figures may increase as rescue crews continue clearing collapsed structures.
As Venezuela battles one of its worst natural disasters in recent history, messages of support continue to pour in from around the world, with India among the countries offering assistance during the ongoing humanitarian crisis.
