Legal Challenge Over Messaging App Restriction
Messaging platform Telegram has approached the Delhi High Court challenging the Central government’s decision to temporarily block access to the app in connection with the upcoming NEET UG re-examination scheduled for June 21, according to legal proceedings mentioned before the court.
The matter came up before a bench headed by Justice Tejas Karia, which agreed to list the petition for hearing later in the day.
Govt Action Linked to Exam Security Concerns
The government’s decision is understood to be linked to heightened security measures following the NEET UG question paper leak controversy, which triggered widespread scrutiny over exam integrity and led to the announcement of a re-test for affected candidates.
Authorities have been tightening monitoring mechanisms to prevent any further compromise of the examination process ahead of the re-exam.
Investigation Handed to CBI
Earlier, the investigation into the alleged paper leak was transferred to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). Preliminary findings reportedly suggest that the exam papers may have been circulated in PDF format through messaging apps such as WhatsApp and Telegram before the examination began, raising serious concerns over digital misuse.
Platform Access Restriction Under Scrutiny
Officials have indicated that the proposed temporary restriction on Telegram was considered as part of broader efforts to curb the circulation of unauthorized exam materials during the sensitive re-test period.
However, Telegram has now legally contested the move, seeking judicial intervention against what it argues is an unjustified restriction on its services.
Court to Hear Matter Today
With the petition now before the Delhi High Court, the issue is set for urgent hearing, where both sides are expected to present arguments on the legality and necessity of the temporary blocking measure amid exam security concerns.
