Maharashtra Orders Cyber Probe Into Pranit More’s Content as Comedy Show Row Deepens

Maharashtra Directs Cyber Police to Review Comedian’s Digital Content

The controversy surrounding stand-up comedian Pranit More has escalated after the Maharashtra Home Department directed the state’s Cyber Police to conduct a comprehensive review of his digital content. The move follows public outrage over comments made during a live performance that later spread widely across social media platforms.

Officials have reportedly been tasked with examining videos from More’s shows, viral clips, and other online material to determine whether any content violates legal provisions. The review is expected to cover multiple platforms where recordings and excerpts from his performances have been circulated.

Viral Show Triggers Widespread Backlash

The scrutiny stems from a comedy event during which audience interactions and remarks by participants drew sharp criticism online.

One viral segment featured an audience member discussing a dating experience and making comments that many viewers considered inappropriate and offensive. Another portion of the show involved medical student Sejal Pawar speaking about anatomy training sessions involving donated cadavers. Her remarks, combined with the audience response and reactions on stage, sparked intense debate and criticism across social media.

As clips from the performance continued to spread, demands for action grew from various quarters, including political leaders and members of the public.

Pranit More Issues Public Apology

Amid mounting criticism, More released a video statement expressing regret over the incident. In his message, he apologised to those who felt hurt by the content and said he was cooperating with authorities in connection with ongoing legal proceedings.

The comedian also appealed for an opportunity to move forward from the controversy, saying he hoped to learn from the episode and regain public trust.

Political Reactions Intensify Debate

The issue has drawn responses from several political figures. Mumbai Mayor Ritu Tawde criticised the remarks made during the show and questioned whether certain forms of comedy were crossing acceptable boundaries.

Congress leader Hussain Dalwai also condemned the content and called for action, while Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis reiterated that freedom of expression must be exercised responsibly and should not come at the expense of personal dignity or public sensitivity.

FIRs and Institutional Action Follow Controversy

The fallout has extended beyond public criticism. Maharashtra Cyber Police have already registered a case involving Pranit More, audience participant Himanshu Jangra, Sejal Pawar and others over allegedly objectionable content linked to the event.

Separately, Jangra reportedly lost his job after his employer cited concerns arising from the controversy. Meanwhile, Sejal Pawar, associated with Mumbai’s Seth G.S. Medical College and KEM Hospital, has been placed on compulsory leave pending further review.

Investigation Expected to Continue

With the cyber review now underway, authorities are expected to analyse the material in detail before deciding on any further legal or administrative steps. The episode has reignited a broader discussion about the limits of humour, accountability in public performances, and the responsibilities of content creators in the digital age.
