“Freedom of expression cannot be misused”: Fadnavis on ₹370 Biryani comedy controversy

The ongoing controversy surrounding comedian Pranit More’s viral “₹370 ki biryani” remark has triggered a sharp response from Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, who has reiterated that while free speech is a constitutional right, it comes with clear responsibilities and limits.

Constitutional right with safeguards

Fadnavis said that the Constitution guarantees freedom of expression, but it also ensures safeguards so that this freedom is not misused in a way that harms individual dignity or social harmony.

“The Constitution of India grants everyone the freedom of expression. However, it also establishes safeguards to ensure this freedom is not misused. When expression becomes unrestrained, it infringes upon the right of individuals in society to live with dignity,” he stated.

Comedy must respect boundaries

Highlighting the popularity of stand-up comedy, the Chief Minister said he personally enjoys the genre but warned that humour should not cross ethical or social limits.

“While everyone enjoys stand-up comedy, and I watch it myself, it is not right to violate societal boundaries or the limits of dignity in the pursuit of entertainment. That would amount to an injustice against people,” he said.

Need for responsibility in public speech

Fadnavis further stressed that performers and public participants must remain aware of the social impact of their words, urging restraint in public expressions.

“Therefore, I feel that stand-up comedy should be performed with due regard for at least the minimum parameters of dignity,” he added.

Background of the controversy

The remarks come amid backlash over a clip from Pranit More’s stand-up show, where an audience member, Himanshu Jangra, made a controversial comment about seeking “sexual favours” in exchange for a meal, which went viral and sparked criticism online.

The issue escalated after another video surfaced featuring medical professional Dr. Sejal Pawar, who made remarks during the show referencing a cadaver in a way many found offensive toward body donors and the medical community.

Debate over comedy boundaries

The controversy has intensified discussions around free speech, accountability in comedy performances, and the responsibility of both performers and audience members in public entertainment spaces.
