DK Shivakumar Set To Become Karnataka CM; Congress Weighs Cabinet Formula And Deputy CM Debate

Senior Congress leader DK Shivakumar is poised to assume charge as Karnataka’s next Chief Minister, with preparations underway for a major swearing-in ceremony expected to mark the beginning of a new political chapter in the state. Alongside him, a select group of legislators is likely to join the government in the first phase of cabinet formation, while additional inductions may follow later.

Congress Finalising Government Formation

Party leaders are engaged in intensive consultations over the composition of the new administration. Sources indicate that the initial round of ministerial appointments could include around a dozen legislators, with the remaining cabinet berths to be filled in a second phase.

Several senior Congress figures are expected to attend the oath-taking ceremony, while organisational and logistical preparations continue in Bengaluru.

Deputy Chief Minister Formula Under Discussion

Internal discussions within the Congress have reportedly focused on ensuring representation for different social and regional groups within the government. One proposal under consideration involves appointing multiple Deputy Chief Ministers to balance community interests and strengthen political outreach.

However, sources suggest that Shivakumar is believed to favour a streamlined structure and is not enthusiastic about creating multiple deputy chief minister posts. The party leadership is expected to take the final decision after further consultations.

Key Names Emerge For Senior Roles

Several prominent Congress leaders are being considered for important positions in the new government. Discussions have reportedly centred around experienced leaders from various communities and regions as the party seeks to create a balanced cabinet.

Among those whose names are being discussed for significant responsibilities are G. Parameshwara, M.B. Patil, K.J. George, Ramalinga Reddy, Priyank Kharge, Eshwar Khandre, Krishna Byre Gowda, Lakshmi Hebbalkar, Satish Jarkiholi and Zameer Ahmed Khan.

Cabinet Expansion Likely In Stages

Party insiders indicate that the Congress leadership may opt for a phased expansion strategy to accommodate competing interests within the organisation. This approach would allow the party to fine-tune its power-sharing arrangement while maintaining internal balance.

Speculation also continues over organisational changes within the Karnataka Congress unit, with some senior leaders potentially being assigned party responsibilities instead of ministerial positions.

Focus On Governance And Stability

As the Congress prepares to form the government under Shivakumar’s leadership, attention is shifting toward governance priorities, cabinet allocation and political management. The final shape of the ministry is expected to emerge after consultations between the state leadership and the party’s central command, which is working to ensure stability and broad-based representation in the new administration.
