Protest Over Party Workers’ Arrests Turns Chaotic
A protest led by Trinamool Congress MP Kalyan Banerjee outside Chanditala Police Station took a dramatic turn on Sunday after the senior leader suffered a head injury amid a tense confrontation during the demonstration.
The protest had been organised to oppose the recent arrest of several Trinamool Congress workers and what party leaders described as continued harassment of their members in different parts of West Bengal.
MP Alleges Stone-Pelting During Demonstration
According to Banerjee, the situation escalated when objects were allegedly thrown during the protest, with one stone reportedly striking him on the head.
“A stone was thrown and it hit my head,” the TMC MP claimed while speaking about the incident.
Videos from the scene showed Banerjee briefly losing balance before being assisted by party supporters. Despite the injury, he remained at the protest site and continued the demonstration while receiving attention from colleagues.
Black Flags and Slogans Heighten Tensions
The gathering witnessed heightened tensions when a group of protesters allegedly displayed black flags and raised slogans against the Trinamool Congress leader.
Supporters accompanying Banerjee had assembled outside the police station to submit a memorandum and register their objections regarding the arrests of party workers. The atmosphere became increasingly charged as rival groups exchanged slogans, leading to a confrontation near the protest venue.
TMC Leader Targets Political Opponents
Following the incident, Banerjee accused political rivals of attempting to create fear among Trinamool Congress leaders and workers.
The MP launched a strong attack on the BJP and Leader of Opposition Suvendu Adhikari, alleging that opposition forces were trying to suppress political activity through intimidation and confrontation.
Fresh Political Flashpoint in Bengal
The episode has added to the growing political tensions in West Bengal, where clashes between rival political camps have frequently triggered controversy in recent months.
