Reporter’s Question Draws Spotlight at Dar-Rubio Meeting
A brief exchange involving a reporter’s question became a talking point during a meeting between Pakistan’s Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar and US Secretary of State Marco Rubio. As the two leaders were leaving the venue, a journalist asked whether Pakistan was prepared to recognise Israel, but neither official responded before departing.
The unanswered question quickly drew attention as discussions continue globally over possible expansion of diplomatic ties between Israel and several Muslim-majority nations.
Pakistan Reaffirms Longstanding Position
Pakistan has maintained for decades that it will not establish formal diplomatic relations with Israel until a sovereign Palestinian state is created. Islamabad’s official position links recognition of Israel to a negotiated settlement based on pre-1967 borders, with East Jerusalem serving as the capital of a future Palestinian state.
Officials in Pakistan have repeatedly stated that there has been no change in this policy despite shifting geopolitical developments in the Middle East.
Abraham Accords Back in Focus
The issue has gained renewed prominence amid efforts by US President Donald Trump to encourage more countries to join the Abraham Accords, a series of agreements that established diplomatic relations between Israel and several Arab nations.
Trump has recently argued that broader regional cooperation, including potential diplomatic understandings involving Iran, could create momentum for additional countries to normalise ties with Israel.
Islamabad Rejects Any Policy Shift
Senior Pakistani leaders have continued to dismiss speculation about joining the Abraham Accords. Defence Minister Khawaja Muhammad Asif recently reiterated that Pakistan would not support any initiative that conflicts with the country’s core principles and longstanding support for the Palestinian cause.
Government leaders have stressed that any future decision would depend on a comprehensive resolution of the Palestinian issue rather than external diplomatic pressure.
Wider Regional Discussions Continue
Beyond the Israel question, the Dar-Rubio discussions reportedly covered broader regional developments, including diplomatic engagement in West Asia and Pakistan’s role in facilitating communication channels on key international issues.
While Pakistan continues to engage with the United States on regional diplomacy, officials have indicated that the country’s position on Israel remains unchanged and tied to progress on Palestinian statehood.
