West Bengal Border Activity Intensifies as “Detect, Delete and Deport” Drive Pushes Illegal Immigration Crackdown

Border activity increases amid intensified immigration enforcement in West Bengal

A heightened enforcement push under the “Detect, Delete and Deport” framework has led to increased movement near the India–Bangladesh border in West Bengal, particularly around the Hakimpur checkpost in North 24 Parganas. The region witnessed unusually high footfall this week, with individuals reportedly linked to illegal residency cases gathering near border points as administrative action intensifies.

Some individuals claim loss of livelihood and voluntary return movement

Several people present at the border area stated that they were facing difficulties in continuing work and staying in the state. Some individuals reportedly said they were preparing to return due to lack of employment and documentation issues, including absence of identity papers such as Aadhaar or ration cards. Many of them are believed to have entered India in recent years through informal channels and worked in small-scale jobs across urban areas.

Political reactions highlight ongoing crackdown stance

Reacting to the situation, BJP leader Khagen Murmu stated that enforcement actions against illegal immigrants are ongoing and that identification and removal processes will continue. He further claimed that individuals without legal status are being traced and processed under existing immigration enforcement mechanisms, while border security strengthening efforts continue.

Administrative directive for holding centres across districts

The West Bengal administration has instructed district authorities to establish holding centres for foreign nationals found residing illegally, as well as for individuals who have completed sentences in correctional facilities. The directive aligns with central government guidelines and focuses on temporary accommodation before deportation or repatriation procedures are completed.

Officials have also been directed to expedite coordination in cases involving undocumented foreign nationals, including individuals from Bangladesh and Rohingya communities, where legal proceedings for return are pending.

Discussion over faster deportation through security coordination

Policy discussions indicate a possible shift toward faster transfer of detained individuals directly to the Border Security Force (BSF) instead of prolonged detention in holding facilities. Under this approach, the BSF would coordinate handover procedures with Bangladesh authorities to streamline repatriation.

Authorities are reportedly aiming to reduce procedural delays and accelerate deportation timelines as border monitoring activity increases. The overall enforcement drive is expected to continue with heightened operational focus in border districts in the coming weeks.
