Rubio Calls India-US Ties ‘Strategic Alliance’ As Trade, Energy And Defence Talks Gain Momentum

United States Secretary of State Marco Rubio on Sunday described India and the United States as “strategic allies,” signalling Washington’s attempt to deepen long-term cooperation with New Delhi amid ongoing negotiations on trade, energy security, defence and global supply chains.

Speaking after high-level discussions with External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar at Hyderabad House in New Delhi, Rubio stressed that the India-US relationship now extends beyond regional diplomacy and increasingly influences developments across multiple global theatres.

The meeting comes ahead of the upcoming Quadrilateral Security Dialogue foreign ministers’ summit, where India, the US, Japan and Australia are expected to discuss Indo-Pacific security, semiconductor supply chains and critical mineral cooperation.

Focus On Trade Reset And Energy Security

The bilateral talks took place at a time when both countries are attempting to stabilise economic ties after months of friction over tariffs, energy imports and trade imbalances.

Rubio indicated that Washington was optimistic about reaching a broader trade understanding with India in the coming months. He suggested that the United States was entering a “trade rebalancing” phase globally and expected future agreements with India to be more durable and mutually beneficial.

Indian officials, meanwhile, highlighted progress on an interim trade framework and renewed emphasis on long-term economic cooperation.

Energy security also emerged as a major discussion point during the meeting, particularly as global oil markets remain volatile due to tensions around the Strait of Hormuz and wider instability in West Asia.

Jaishankar confirmed that India has significantly increased energy imports from the United States over the past year as part of a broader “de-risking” strategy aimed at reducing vulnerability to geopolitical disruptions.

Defence And Nuclear Cooperation Back In Focus

The two sides also reviewed defence cooperation, with officials confirming the renewal of a 10-year bilateral defence partnership framework.

Discussions reportedly covered military technology collaboration, strategic manufacturing and supply chain resilience in sensitive sectors.

Jaishankar additionally referred to the recently passed Shanti Act, which Indian officials believe could unlock greater civilian nuclear cooperation between the two countries.

Diplomatic sources indicated that Washington is also keen to accelerate collaboration with India in semiconductor manufacturing, rare earth processing and critical mineral supply chains as part of wider efforts to reduce dependence on China.

Rubio Downplays Concerns Over Pakistan Outreach

Rubio also attempted to calm concerns in New Delhi regarding Washington’s recent engagement with Pakistan, including interactions with Pakistan’s military establishment.

The US Secretary of State maintained that America’s ties with other countries did not come at the expense of its partnership with India and described the India-US relationship as strategically distinct.

His remarks appeared aimed at reassuring Indian policymakers amid growing debate over whether Washington’s tactical regional balancing could complicate long-term strategic trust between the two countries.

India Positions Itself Through Strategic Autonomy

Despite closer engagement with Washington, India continues to maintain its multi-alignment foreign policy approach by simultaneously engaging with forums such as BRICS and maintaining ties with Russia, Iran and other regional powers.

Analysts believe the current phase of India-US relations reflects a more transactional and interest-driven partnership, where cooperation increasingly depends on concrete economic, technological and strategic outcomes rather than rhetorical alignment alone.

With the Quad summit approaching and trade negotiations expected to intensify, Rubio’s visit is being viewed as an attempt to prevent emerging geopolitical and economic differences from widening further.
