‘Rajiv Gandhi’s Killers Remembered for Politics?’ BJP Targets Rahul Gandhi After Vijay’s LTTE Row Remarks

Political Row Intensifies in Tamil Nadu Over LTTE References

A fresh political controversy erupted on Tuesday after the Bharatiya Janata Party launched a sharp attack on Congress leader Rahul Gandhi over his party’s political alignment in Tamil Nadu, following remarks made by Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam chief Vijay on Mullivaikkal Remembrance Day.

The BJP accused the Congress of compromising on ideological positions for political alliances after Vijay expressed solidarity with Tamils affected during the final phase of the Sri Lankan civil war.

Vijay’s Mullivaikkal Message Sparks Political Reactions

On the occasion of Mullivaikkal Remembrance Day, Vijay posted a message on social media expressing support for Tamils across the world and remembering the victims of the Sri Lankan conflict.

“We will carry the memories of Mullivaikkal in our hearts! We will always stand in solidarity for the rights of our Tamil kin living across the seas!” Vijay wrote on X.

The statement quickly became a political flashpoint because references linked to the final phase of the Sri Lankan civil war and the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam remain highly sensitive in India.

BJP Accuses Congress of Political Opportunism

Responding to Vijay’s remarks, BJP leader Amit Malviya criticised Rahul Gandhi and accused the Congress party of maintaining alliances with political forces allegedly sympathetic toward the LTTE despite the organisation’s role in the assassination of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi.

“Tamil Nadu’s new Chief Minister has paid homage to LTTE chief Velupillai Prabhakaran, whose outfit assassinated former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi,” Malviya said in a social media post.

He further alleged that Congress had historically remained politically comfortable with parties accused by opponents of being soft on LTTE-linked narratives.

“Of course, Rahul Gandhi would have no problem with it, as long as the Congress gets a slice of power,” he added.

LTTE References Remain Politically Sensitive in India

The controversy has revived political memories surrounding the assassination of Rajiv Gandhi in 1991, an incident that continues to shape national discourse around the LTTE.

The Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam, led by Velupillai Prabhakaran, was banned in India following its involvement in terrorist activities and the killing of the former Prime Minister.

Any public statements perceived as sympathetic to the LTTE or its leadership often trigger strong political reactions across party lines.

What Is Mullivaikkal Remembrance Day?

Mullivaikkal Remembrance Day is observed annually on May 18 to remember Tamil civilians who lost their lives during the final stages of the Sri Lankan civil war in 2009.

The remembrance is linked to the Mullivaikkal region in Sri Lanka’s Mullaitivu district, where intense military operations between Sri Lankan forces and LTTE fighters led to large-scale civilian casualties.

Tamil communities across different countries organise memorial events each year to honour victims, remember survivors and raise issues related to accountability, justice and human rights.

Tamil Nadu Politics Likely to Heat Up Further

The latest controversy is expected to sharpen political tensions in Tamil Nadu ahead of future electoral battles, especially as Vijay’s political role continues to expand after entering active politics.

The BJP has increasingly attempted to challenge opposition parties over issues linked to nationalism, separatism and historical positions on the LTTE, while regional parties continue to frame Mullivaikkal Remembrance Day primarily as a humanitarian and Tamil identity issue.
