A day after being sworn in as the new Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, Vijay on Monday met former Chief Minister M. K. Stalin and Deputy Chief Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin at their residence in Chennai.
The meeting, described by political circles as a courtesy visit, marked the first formal interaction between Vijay and the DMK leadership after the Assembly election results and the formation of the new government in the state.
Warm Welcome at Stalin Residence
Vijay received a warm reception during the visit. Udhayanidhi Stalin greeted the newly elected Chief Minister with a handshake and a hug as he arrived at the residence. Later, MK Stalin also embraced Vijay, signalling a cordial atmosphere between the leaders despite the intense political contest during the elections.
During the interaction, the leaders exchanged silk shawls and bouquets, reflecting traditional Tamil political courtesy and mutual respect.
First Meeting After Change of Power
The meeting comes at a significant political moment in Tamil Nadu following the recent Assembly elections, where Vijay’s party, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam, emerged as the ruling party.
Political observers see the interaction as an important gesture aimed at maintaining a healthy relationship between the ruling government and the opposition leadership in the state.
Vijay Resigns From One Assembly Seat
Meanwhile, Vijay officially resigned from the Tiruchirappalli East Assembly constituency seat on Sunday after taking oath as Chief Minister. He decided to retain the Perambur Assembly constituency seat, both of which he had won during the April 23 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections.
As a result of the resignation from one constituency, TVK’s strength in the 234-member Tamil Nadu Assembly has come down from 108 seats to 107 seats.
Political Focus Shifts to Governance
With the swearing-in ceremony completed and cabinet responsibilities beginning, attention is now turning towards the new government’s administrative priorities and its relationship with opposition parties in the state.
