Who Will Become Kerala CM After Congress’ Shock Comeback? Leadership Race Heats Up

After a decade of CPI(M) rule, Kerala has witnessed a major political turnaround as the Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF) returned to power with a decisive mandate. The result marks the end of the Left Democratic Front government led by Pinarayi Vijayan and signals a fresh political direction for the state.

The Congress did not project a Chief Ministerial face before the elections, instead relying on collective leadership to take on the ruling LDF. With victory now secured, the biggest question dominating Kerala politics is who will become the next Chief Minister.

K. C. Venugopal has emerged as a powerful contender for the top post. A close aide of the Gandhi family and a senior organisational leader of the party, he currently serves as a Lok Sabha MP. Although he did not contest the Assembly elections, he remains a strong internal choice. If selected, he would need to enter the state legislature through a by-election, as Kerala does not have a Legislative Council. His position within the central leadership gives him significant influence in the decision-making process.

Another strong name in the race is V. D. Satheesan, the outgoing Leader of the Opposition. A five-time MLA from Paravur, he has built a strong reputation in Kerala politics through consistent electoral success and a firm organisational presence. Known for his Nehruvian ideological leanings, Satheesan has been one of the most visible faces of the Congress in the state and is widely seen as a strong administrative option.

Veteran leader Ramesh Chennithala is also a key contender. A senior Congress figure with decades of political experience, he began his career in the party’s student wing and later rose to national prominence. He has previously served as Leader of the Opposition and held key organisational roles within the All India Congress Committee, including handling factional issues in other states. His strong connect with the Nair community, which forms a significant portion of Kerala’s population, adds to his political strength.

The Congress victory itself has been described as a major political shift in Kerala, ending a decade-long Left rule and reshaping the state’s power balance. The absence of a declared Chief Ministerial candidate did not weaken the UDF campaign; instead, it allowed flexibility that helped the alliance secure a strong mandate.

As internal discussions continue, the Congress is expected to announce its Chief Ministerial choice soon, a decision that will define the next phase of Kerala politics after one of the most closely watched elections in recent years.
