Jabalpur: A tragic boat accident at the Bargi Dam reservoir in Jabalpur has raised serious questions over safety protocols after a cruise capsized during a sudden storm. The death toll climbed to nine on Friday as rescue teams recovered more bodies from the Narmada River reservoir.
Weather alert under scrutiny
Authorities are facing tough questions after it emerged that the India Meteorological Department had issued a warning a day earlier, predicting strong winds of up to 40–50 kmph in the region. Despite the advisory, the vessel was allowed to operate, a decision now being examined for possible negligence.
Survivors allege lack of safety measures
Survivors of the incident have alleged serious lapses in safety arrangements. A tourist recounted that strong winds suddenly destabilised the boat, allowing water to enter and triggering panic onboard. She claimed that life jackets were not readily provided and were distributed only after the situation worsened.
Eyewitness accounts raise questions
Passengers also alleged that warnings from locals were ignored. According to survivors, villagers had signalled the boat operator to steer towards safer waters, but the vessel continued on its course before capsizing. Some passengers reportedly had to access stored life jackets themselves in an emergency.
Rescue operations continue
Rescue teams, including local authorities and disaster response personnel, remain engaged in search operations. Around 22 people have been rescued so far, while several others are still feared missing. The submerged vessel lies nearly 20 metres underwater, about 300 metres from the shore.
Tourism operations under scanner
The cruise service at Bargi Dam, operational since 2006 as part of tourism activities, is now under investigation. Multiple vessels, including cruises and houseboats, operate in the area, and officials are reviewing compliance with safety norms and weather advisories.
Families await answers
The incident has left families devastated, with many waiting anxiously for news of missing relatives. Survivors have also reported injuries sustained during the accident, further intensifying calls for accountability and stricter enforcement of safety measures.
