“Everyone Remembers the 1995 Guest House Incident”: Yogi Targets Samajwadi Party Over Women’s Safety

UP Chief Minister targets Congress and Samajwadi Party during women empowerment session, highlights sanitation and health reforms

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath launched a strong attack on opposition parties during a special discussion on women empowerment in the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Assembly, accusing them of consistently resisting welfare measures aimed at improving women’s dignity, safety and self-reliance.

Addressing the Assembly, the Chief Minister said that every major reform introduced for the welfare of women—whether related to sanitation, safety or economic empowerment—had faced opposition from parties such as the Congress, the Samajwadi Party and other members of the INDIA bloc.

Yogi accuses opposition of resisting women-focused reforms

Yogi Adityanath said the opposition has repeatedly objected to initiatives designed to improve the condition of women in society.

He asserted that measures focused on dignity, respect and self-reliance for women were opposed for political reasons, despite their social importance. According to him, the same pattern of resistance was visible not only in the state Assembly but also during parliamentary debates.

The Chief Minister said the government remained committed to empowering women despite criticism from opposition benches.

1995 guest house incident invoked

During his speech, Yogi Adityanath also referred to the 1995 State Guest House incident, using it to question the opposition’s record on women’s dignity and safety.

Recalling the political violence that took place during that period, he said the incident involving former Chief Minister Mayawati exposed the attitude of the Samajwadi Party toward women in public life.

He claimed that the BJP had intervened at the time to ensure Mayawati’s safety and cited the role of late BJP leader Brahm Dutt Dwivedi in protecting her.

According to the Chief Minister, such incidents raise questions about the credibility of opposition parties when they speak about women’s dignity today.

Government highlights sanitation improvements

The Chief Minister also pointed to sanitation reforms as a major achievement in improving women’s safety in rural areas.

He said that before the expansion of toilet infrastructure, many women in villages were forced to go out in unsafe conditions, exposing them to harassment and indignity.

According to Yogi Adityanath, the implementation of the Swachh Bharat Mission significantly improved hygiene standards and created safer living conditions for women by ensuring access to household toilets.

Focus on encephalitis control

Along with women welfare, the Chief Minister highlighted the government’s efforts in tackling encephalitis, a disease that once affected several districts in the state.

He said earlier governments had failed to control the disease despite repeated outbreaks, while the current administration had made major progress in reducing fatalities.

Yogi Adityanath claimed that under the “double-engine government,” the state had succeeded in bringing deaths caused by encephalitis under control through improved health infrastructure and intervention measures.

Opposition accused of double standards

In his concluding remarks, the Chief Minister accused opposition parties of changing their positions depending on the political platform.

He said parties that publicly claim to support development often oppose the same proposals when they are discussed in legislative forums.
