Gujarat Local Body Election Results 2026: Counting Underway Amid Tight Security, BJP Starts With Early Lead

Counting of votes for the 2026 Gujarat local body elections began on Tuesday under strict security arrangements across the state, making it one of the most closely watched political developments in Gujarat this year. Polling was conducted on April 26 and 27 across 15 municipal corporations, 84 municipalities, and more than 200 district and taluka panchayats.

These elections are politically significant as they are the first major civic polls to be held after the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, offering an early indication of the political mood at the grassroots level.

Rural Areas Outperform Urban Centres in Voter Participation

The elections saw stronger voter turnout in rural regions compared to urban areas. Official figures show that municipal corporations recorded 55.1 per cent voter turnout, while municipalities reported 65.53 per cent.

The turnout was even higher in rural governing bodies, with district panchayats recording 66.64 per cent and taluka panchayats reaching 67.26 per cent, indicating strong participation from voters in the countryside.

Tight Security at 382 Counting Centres Across the State

Authorities have put in place massive security arrangements to ensure smooth counting operations. Vote counting is taking place at 382 centres with the deployment of more than 28,240 officials.

To maintain peace and law and order, over 33,750 police personnel have also been deployed across Gujarat, underscoring the scale and importance of the elections.

BJP Secures Strong Early Advantage With Over 700 Uncontested Seats

More than 9,200 seats are being contested in the local body elections, although a large number have already been decided unopposed. The Bharatiya Janata Party has won over 700 uncontested seats, giving the ruling party a substantial lead before the counting results are fully declared.

The Congress has raised objections regarding these uncontested wins, alleging that some candidates withdrew due to intimidation and inducements. However, the State Election Commission clarified that these uncontested results were confined to municipalities and nagar palikas.

BJP, Congress and AAP Face Off in Key Gujarat Civic Battle

The electoral contest is primarily between the BJP, Congress, and the Aam Aadmi Party, while AIMIM has also fielded candidates in selected constituencies.

This election also comes after Gujarat increased OBC reservation in local bodies from 10 per cent to 27 per cent, a development that could play an important role in shaping the outcome across several regions.

Major Municipal Corporations and High-Profile Candidates in Focus

The key municipal corporations in the spotlight include Ahmedabad, Surat, Vadodara, and Rajkot, where the results are expected to reflect broader political trends in the state.

Several notable personalities are contesting in these polls, including former IPS officer M L Ninama, former radio jockey Abha Desai, and former AAP MLA Bhupendra Bhayani.

Gujarat Local Poll Results May Shape Political Narrative Ahead

While the BJP is expected to maintain its dominance in Gujarat’s local body institutions, the focus remains on whether the opposition can improve its performance and make any meaningful gains.

The final results, expected later in the day, will provide a clearer picture of the grassroots political balance in Gujarat and may influence the political narrative in the run-up to future state and national elections.
