In a shocking security scare that rattled Washington’s political elite, multiple gunshots were fired near the entrance of the prestigious White House Correspondents’ Dinner on Saturday night, forcing US President Donald Trump, First Lady Melania Trump, and Vice President officials to be rushed to safety amid scenes of panic and chaos.
The terrifying incident unfolded at the Washington Hilton Hotel, where hundreds of journalists, lawmakers, celebrities, and diplomats had gathered for the annual high-profile dinner. Witnesses reported hearing five to eight gunshots near the magnetometer screening area, triggering stampedes as attendees scrambled for cover while Secret Service agents swiftly evacuated top officials from the packed banquet hall.
Reacting to the alarming development, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday expressed relief that the American President and senior leaders were unharmed.
Taking to X, PM Modi said, “Relieved to learn that President Trump, the First Lady and Vice President are safe and unharmed following the recent security incident at a Washington DC hotel. I extend my best wishes for their continued safety and well-being. Violence has no place in a democracy and must be unequivocally condemned.”
According to reports, the suspect behind the dramatic shooting scare has been identified as 31-year-old Cole Tomas Allen of Torrance, California. Authorities say Allen allegedly assembled a long firearm inside an unsecured back room before approaching the security checkpoint area and opening fire.
At least one law enforcement officer was hit during the gunfire, but was saved by a bullet-resistant vest, preventing serious injury. The rapid response by security personnel prevented what could have turned into a catastrophic tragedy at one of Washington’s most elite gatherings.
Later addressing reporters, President Donald Trump described the shooting as “shocking,” revealing that he initially thought the loud sounds were caused by “something falling.” He praised security and law enforcement teams for acting swiftly and restoring order within moments.
