“Matter of Pride”: Shinde Supports Modi’s Women Reservation Push Ahead of 2029 Plan

Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde has strongly supported the Women’s Reservation Bill, calling it a major step towards empowering women and enhancing their role in the country’s future.

Speaking to reporters, Shinde praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi for prioritising women’s empowerment, stating that the move will boost self-respect and self-reliance among women across India. He described the legislation as a moment of pride for women and a landmark reform in governance.

Strong Push for Women Empowerment

Shinde said that under the leadership of PM Modi, India is progressing rapidly on multiple fronts, including economic growth and social development. He emphasised that women must be equal partners in this progress and play a greater role in decision-making at national and state levels.

According to him, the reservation policy will ensure that women gain more representation and influence in politics, helping shape policies that directly impact their lives.

Modi Announces Special Parliament Session

Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced that a special session of Parliament will be held on April 16, 17, and 18 to move forward with implementing the Women’s Reservation framework.

He stated that the objective is to ensure that the benefits of the reservation law come into effect from the 2029 Lok Sabha elections, giving women a guaranteed 33 percent representation in Parliament and state assemblies.

33 Percent Reservation and Seat Expansion Plan

The Women’s Reservation Bill, also known as the Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam, proposes reserving one-third of seats in the Lok Sabha and state assemblies for women.

With the current strength of the Lok Sabha at 543 seats, a proposed increase of nearly 50 percent could take the total to around 816 seats. Out of these, approximately 273 seats would be reserved for women, significantly boosting their political participation.

Assurance on Population-Based Seat Allocation

Addressing concerns over seat distribution, PM Modi assured that states which have effectively controlled population growth will not lose representation.

He said that the government is committed to ensuring fairness in seat allocation while also advancing women’s representation, a demand that has been pending for decades.

Long-Pending Reform Finally Moves Ahead

The Prime Minister highlighted that the demand for women’s reservation has been pending for nearly 40 years and stressed that further delay is not justified. He reiterated that the government is determined to implement the law and ensure that women across the country benefit from it starting 2029.

What is the Women’s Reservation Bill
It is a law that provides 33 percent reservation for women in the Lok Sabha and state legislative assemblies to increase their political representation.

When will the reservation be implemented
The government aims to implement the reservation from the 2029 Lok Sabha elections after completing necessary procedures including seat delimitation.
