“Strength, Stealth, Power!” INS Taragiri Commissioned — Big Boost to India’s Maritime Might

The Indian Navy has commissioned its advanced stealth frigate INS Taragiri in Visakhapatnam, marking a major step in strengthening India’s maritime capabilities.

Describing it as a symbol of “strength, stealth and indigenous excellence,” the Navy said the warship reflects India’s emergence as a formidable power in the Indo-Pacific region.

Commissioned in Presence of Defence Minister

The warship was formally inducted in the presence of Defence Minister Rajnath Singh.

The commissioning comes at a time when India’s eastern seaboard is gaining increasing strategic importance due to evolving regional security challenges and growing global engagements.

What Makes INS Taragiri Special?

INS Taragiri is the fourth stealth frigate under the ambitious Project 17A programme.

Weighing around 6,670 tonnes, the warship represents a new generation of naval platforms with advanced design, reduced radar visibility, and enhanced combat capabilities.

Built by Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited, the ship highlights India’s growing self-reliance in defence manufacturing.

A Big Push for ‘Make in India’

With over 75% indigenous content, INS Taragiri stands as a strong example of the government’s ‘Aatmanirbhar Bharat’ initiative.

More than 200 MSMEs have contributed to its construction, supporting domestic industry and generating employment across the country.

The warship is equipped with cutting-edge systems, including supersonic surface-to-surface missiles, medium-range air defence systems, and anti-submarine warfare capabilities.

These are integrated through a modern combat management system, allowing rapid and precise response to threats.

Beyond combat, INS Taragiri is designed for multiple roles.

It can undertake high-intensity warfare operations as well as humanitarian missions like disaster relief and evacuation operations, making it a versatile asset for the Navy.
