In a shocking development ahead of West Bengal elections, Mofakkerul Islam, a leader of the All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen, has been arrested for allegedly masterminding a massive protest in Malda that turned into a 9-hour hostage crisis involving judicial officers.
The arrest was made by the West Bengal Police at Bagdogra Airport while he was reportedly attempting to flee the state.
What Happened in Malda?
The incident took place at the Kaliachak II Block Development Office, where seven judicial officers overseeing the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) process were gheraoed and held hostage for over nine hours.
The situation escalated after protesters demanded a meeting with the officers, which was denied. By evening, the protest turned aggressive, trapping the officials inside the building.
How Were the Officers Rescued?
The officers, including three women and even a five-year-old child present inside, were finally rescued close to midnight by police teams.
During the evacuation, protesters reportedly hurled stones at police vehicles, with visuals showing damaged cars and chaotic scenes as officers were escorted to safety.
Why Is the SIR Process So Controversial?
The Special Intensive Revision exercise by the Election Commission of India has become a major flashpoint in West Bengal.
Over 63 lakh names were deleted from the voter list, while another 60 lakh voters were put under adjudication, triggering widespread protests and political tension.
Supreme Court Slams Bengal Government
The incident reached the Supreme Court of India, which strongly criticised the state administration.
A bench led by Chief Justice Surya Kant termed the situation a “criminal failure” and expressed shock over the breakdown of law and order.
The court also observed that West Bengal appears to be “highly polarised,” with politics interfering even in judicial processes.
What Orders Did the Supreme Court Give?
The court issued strict directions:
Deployment of central forces to protect judicial officers and their families
Investigation to be handed over to central agencies like CBI or NIA
Restriction on entry at the BDO office to prevent further incidents
Summoning of top officials including Chief Secretary, DGP, and District Magistrate on April 6
Is This a Law-and-Order Breakdown or Political Tension?
Was This a Planned Attack on the System?
With police calling Islam the “mastermind,” questions are being raised about whether the protest was pre-planned.
Will Central Agencies Take Over the Case?
The Supreme Court’s order to involve central agencies signals the seriousness of the incident.
