Nitish Kumar Hints at Samrat Choudhary as Next Bihar CM

In a major political development, Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar has dropped strong hints that Deputy CM Samrat Choudhary could be his successor, triggering intense speculation about a leadership change in the state.

Public Endorsement Sparks Buzz

While addressing a public gathering in Jamui during his “Samriddhi Yatra,” Nitish Kumar made a symbolic gesture by placing his hand on Choudhary’s shoulder and appealing to people to support him. Smiling, he said, “Now he will handle all the work,” urging the crowd to bless him.

Clearer Signal Than Before

Nitish had earlier hinted at Choudhary’s elevation, but this time his message appeared more direct. Political circles are abuzz with reports that Nitish may soon move to the Rajya Sabha and step down as Chief Minister, paving the way for a leadership transition.

BJP Likely to Stake Claim

With the Bharatiya Janata Party emerging as the single largest party in the last Bihar Assembly elections, the party is expected to stake claim to the मुख्यमंत्री post if Nitish steps aside. Choudhary, currently number two in the cabinet, holds the crucial Home portfolio, further strengthening his position.

Key Shift in Power Dynamics

In a significant move, Nitish Kumar had earlier handed over the powerful Home department to the BJP—something he had retained for nearly 20 years. This shift is being seen as a major indicator of changing political dynamics within the alliance.

Caste Factor in Focus

Samrat Choudhary represents the Tarapur Assembly constituency and belongs to the Kushwaha community, the second-largest OBC group in Bihar after the Yadavs. The BJP is believed to be eyeing consolidation of non-Yadav OBC votes, especially as the Rashtriya Janata Dal is also targeting this voter base.

BJP Eyes Historic Opportunity

Bihar remains one of the few major Hindi heartland states where the BJP has not held the Chief Minister’s post independently. Elevating Choudhary could be a strategic move to change that and strengthen the party’s social and political base in the state.

With Nitish Kumar’s latest remarks, the possibility of a leadership shift in Bihar has gained momentum, setting the stage for a major political shake-up in the coming weeks.
