BJP Releases 2nd Candidate List for Kerala Polls, Targets Vijayan Seat

The Bharatiya Janata Party on Thursday released its second list of 39 candidates for the upcoming Kerala Assembly Elections 2026, intensifying the political battle in the state. With this announcement, the BJP has now declared a total of 86 candidates for the high-stakes polls.

BJP Targets CM Pinarayi Vijayan’s Seat

In a major political move, the party has fielded K Ranjith from Dharmadam, directly challenging Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan. The constituency is considered a stronghold of the CM, making it one of the most closely watched contests in the election.

Key Names in Second List

Among the prominent candidates, former Mizoram Governor Kummanam Rajasekharan will contest from Aranmula. Other names include Robin Radhakrishnan from Kundara, Ashwini ML from Kasaragod, advocate B Gopalakrishnan from Guruvayoor, and PR Sivasankar from Ernakulam.

Focus on Women Representation

The BJP has also increased its focus on women representation. Six women candidates have been included in the second list, taking the total number of women nominees to 13. Out of these, seven were announced in the first list, reflecting the party’s effort to project inclusive politics.

Poll Date and Political Battle Lines

The Election Commission of India has scheduled polling for April 9, 2026, in a single phase, with counting set for May 4. The main contest is expected between the Left Democratic Front led by Communist Party of India (Marxist) and the United Democratic Front led by the Indian National Congress. The NDA, led by the BJP, is also aiming to make a stronger impact this time.

What Happened in 2021 Elections

In the 2021 Assembly elections, the Left Democratic Front created history by retaining power, marking the first time since 1977 that a ruling alliance returned to power consecutively in Kerala. The CPI(M) emerged as the largest party with 62 seats, while the Congress secured 21 seats as the main opposition force under the UDF alliance.

BJP Eyes Breakthrough in Kerala

Despite contesting in previous elections, the BJP and its NDA allies failed to win any seats in 2021, though they managed to secure a notable vote share. With an expanded candidate list and new faces, the party is now aiming to open its account in the Kerala Assembly and challenge the dominance of traditional alliances.

As the election battle heats up, all eyes are now on whether the BJP can make a breakthrough or if the traditional LDF vs UDF contest will continue to dominate Kerala politics.
